If you have time to post pics.......you have time to tell what it is.

    Let me guess:

6 Dasher with 15" barrel to be used for light gun competition.

    How'd I do?

Remington XP-100, with a PTG bolt.
It is a Long Dasher or a 6mmx47 Lapua Improved-Not based off of the 6BR.
15" barrel and it weighs under 7 pounds.
    Carbon fiber stock.
8T Brux barrel, and a Aluminum brake.
    Jewell trigger.

    Reducing torque

    Reducing torque

Ok, I'm naïve. Reducing torque from the bolt closing?? The bullet going thru the barrel??? Does the bullet really try to turn the barrel that much??? Torque from the earths rotation???

There you go Ernie over compensating again? :jester:

I get the toque somewhat but is the barrel free floated ?

If so to me it would seem more weight/mass should be near the grip area.

I'd like to hear more on it if you would.

    When is the test drive?
  • Ernie BishopErnie Bishop Posts: 8,609 Senior Member
    The barrel is free-floated.
Majority of the way is in the barrel and the action itself.
Just got to put together last night haven't shot it yet.

That is a pretty cool looking hand cannon! You definitely have some unique toys and that one looks like it loves to make tiny groups.

Going to go shoot it tomorrow with some fireforming loads.
    Pretty excited.
I will have to do a lot of case prep to get it ready for the match which begins this coming Thursday.
No minute like the last minute:jester:
If the fireforming loads Eric put together shoot great, I will use the fireforming loads for the first part of the match 500 yards.
If that happens, then all I will have to do is develop a load for the formed brass.
Plan on using CCI small rifle magnum primers, H-4350, and 105 Berger Hybrids.

It does not have a traditional recoil lug either.
In efforts to keep the weight down there is an internal lug that was milled out on the bottom of the action itself.

After some more fiddling around, I thought I might be able to make weight with a 30mm tube.
Yea! Sightron S-III 6-24 with MOA reticle.
7 pounds and 7 ounces. I am an ounce under weight and I already have the sunshade on it. Talk about close

Did a ladder load development today at 300 yards. Had full value wind at around 8mph, but that speed was not constant. The vertical on the top group was right at 1/2". That was pleasing. Steve and I expected the wind to give us fits horizontally.
    LongDasherLadder_zpscf6d40eb.jpg

After some more loading I took the top four numbers and loaded 8 of each ( 5 for group and 3 for getting some MV info. Wind had changed, was stronger with more gusting. Shot again at 300 yards. Best group had four shots right at 1/4MOA with one going higher. On all four groups the vertical was higher than when doing the ladder in the morning. That was to be expected, but I still wanted better, even though the conditions were not in my favor.
105 hybrid @ 2888 fps. Took some of the other rounds (9 in all) and shot at 400 yards and was able to put several shots on top of each other on steel, which is always gratifying. Then I went out to 500 yards with fire forming loads, but soon had to give up becasue of excessive wind and rain.
Will load some more of my chosen load and adjust the OAL 10 thou longer and then 10 thou less to see if I can tighten things up a bit more.

    Ernie,

You have some beautiful artillery pieces, and this one is no exception. I envy your collection and your ability to shoot them.

I refer to them as artillery pieces because they require the same expertise to use at long range as artillery...more so, actually, since you are required to hit a small spot, instead of just being able to obliterate a half acre. :jester:

My wife has named the SP, "Batman."
This is a first for her, and I am keeping the name.
Several guys think I should get a couple of Batman stickers for the forend.
Tomorrow is the last day of the MOA LR handgun comp, and so far, Batman has done quite well. Hopefully the trend will continue tomorrow.
We have competed at 500 and 750 yards, and we will shoot 1000 yards tomorrow, weather permitting.
Wind today was terrible with full value corrections for over 20 mph for the majority of the day. Add to that they were gusty a good portion of the time.
Fog and rain have delayed things to the point that we will not have time for the roving field course tomorrow. Hopefully we can get the 1K match done without being rained out.

Ernie, you are Freaking amazing! Not only do you have the imagination or rather creativity to engineer building these super accurate shorties, you have the extreme ability to shoot them accurately into the next two zip codes!

    Thank you.
Here is some group therapy from yesterday at 500 yards.
I shot three relays of five shots each.
    reference_zps43d53662.jpg
You can see how good this rig shoots by the vertical group on the green (one of the relays). The vertical on that group is 1.8", and of course the wind got me and spread it out. The wind is always the Achilles heel.
My third relay was my best group at 500 (not dots).
    Sub3inchgroup_zps0a56a09f.jpg
If you shot some of these rigs, I think most of you would be shocked at how small of a group you could shoot at distance.

YES! Like I said, you are totally amazing. what's that vertically? 2 inches (center to center)? And you are just getting used to it.

Just under 2 inches (1.8 inches).
1/2 MOA at 500 yards is approx 2.5 inches and a 1/4MOA group at 500 yards is 1.25 inches.

Ernie, that is an awesome rig! You are getting about 70 f.p.s. more out of 105's than I am out of a 6 BR Norma chambered rifle with a 29 inch barrel!
I plan to have mine opened up to Dasher to get near the 3000 fps range and you're almost there with a much shorter barrel. Very nice!

    A long Dasher......Hmmmm...
