VX-2 vs VX-II

I'm getting ready to buy one of these scopes, hoping someone may have some personal experience. The 2 is a 3-9x40 and despite what Leupold says on their specs, weighs in at 10oz. The II is supposed to weigh in at about the same, but probably a bit less, and is a 3-9x33. I have heard the light and FOV leaves a lot to be desired but unfortunately i cannot find one around town to check out. I can get either for around the same price, 50$ more on the II.

These are the only two scopes i am considering due to their weight. Hopefully one of you fine gents can shed some firsthand light on them

I thought it was a joke or trick question when I first read it before I did a little research. Based on preliminary info and all things being equal I would go with the 40 just for the larger objective.

Just so I understand, the 2 is a current production scope, and the II is the old model. Correct?

I'd for sure trade a couple ounces, the newer coatings, and the 40mm bell on the 2, vs the II.

How come the II is more $$?

The way I have had it explained to me is that A VX2 is the same as a Vari-X III, go with the better deal.

The II is part of the ultra light/ rimfire line. I can order the II as my direct vendor discount, i get one a year. The 2 we have at the store, and with my discount they come out to about the same price. The 2 is not a deep enough discount through the vendor to waste an order on. The II is normally around 400$+. To see it on Leupold.com you have to scroll down to the UL/RF section. It is not a RF scope, though.

I am looking at these two all because of weight, i won't go over 10oz, which is why i am not looking to cash in a deale discount on higher end glass. The scope currently on the gun is a porky 18oz and it barely clears the cut out on the bolt handle. Leupold makes an even lighter II in 2-7x32 but i do not think it will fit themounts

...got II's & 2's, make sure the older VX-II has clicks not friction knobs, the 2.5X8 VX-3/III is in that weight range & a very nice scope, but a little more. Make sure the scope you buy has click detents...

Ok. They have it listed as a VX-2 Ultralight.

Except for the twilight lens system, it has all the features of a VX 3.

That being said, I'd probably give up an ounce and a half, go with the VX-3 2.5-8x36 for the same money.

I'd trade the light gathering of the bigger objective, combined with the better lens coatings, for 1.5oz and 1x.

My only concerns with the 2-8 models is them fitting the long action. The mounts on the rifle are what they are....not a plethora of mounting options for Colt Light Rifle without calling up Melvin Forbes and spending more money

Just double checked, that vx3 has the same "B" length as the VX2 so it should fit. If it is like the 2 the actual weight might be under the listed weight and about the same. I will see what the price is and availability. Hoped to have this all done sooner....but finances did not allow earlier purchase. I would much rather have the 2-8 ultra light at 8oz....but this might work out. Im really shooting for a sub 7lbs rifle, and the closer to 6 the better. Ill be hunting deer in sheep country in 7 weeks. Rifle should be at the range within 2 weeks hopefully. Just need dies and bullets. Sucks i cannot find the bullet i want but my 2nd choice is available

It's been so long and I've lost track of your forgotten projects. What caliber are we talking here?

IF I have the money, I will be putting a new *lighter* stock on the FWT M70 and new glass. This is for my Colt Light Rifle (the design Melvin Forbes sold to Colt, which was the previous Ultra Light Arms, but with a lower quality barrel and stock). It is a 30-06. Not my chosen caliber, but when a 5.75lbs rifle falls in your lap and you need a sheep rifle, you buy it.

    What bullets you looking for?
  • MileHighShooterMileHighShooter Posts: 4,997 Senior Member
130gr TTSX. The TSX is available, but I missed the restocking 2 weeks ago on Midway and they didn't last long. Also been looking for the 168 TTSX for the M70, since that gun loves em.

I'll check around. I figured ttsx. Premium hunting bullets are kinda easy to find around here, target bullets, forget it.

Whole lotta' nothing around here, period. Much appreciated for the look

Wait, you scored a sheep tag??? Holy crap, lemme know what bullets you want and I'll keep them in mind when I hit the big city LGSs twice a month or so.
Geez, a sheep tag. You could suck start a Harley.

No, but I need a sheep rifle

I'm hunting mule deer above timberline IN sheep country, which in my unit means 11,5 and up...which is where the sheep in the unit live. If I see good numbers though, I'll snag a ewe tag next year, those don't take lifetimes to draw.

I'm trying to find the 130gr Barnes TTSX in .308

Dan, by VX-II I think you mean the Vari X II. The VARI X II is the same scope as the newer VX-1. The newer VX-2 is what used to be the old Vari X III. It is a step up from the Vari X II, and a good scope. If you have the money, get the VX-2. If not, or if it boils down to a weight saving issue, the Vari X II is still a good scope. As for splitting hairs weight wise, that sort of thing is not an issue with me because there's no timberline to hunt above around here, LOL!

That silver thing I have atop my 9.3 is a Vari X II. It's a good solid scope.

Or you could just spend the same amount on most any other brand of scope and have superior optics. Not arguing aesthetics or customer service:troll:

This is probably no help at all
However I'll give it a go.
    I've had, Vari x 111, Vx 111 and VX3 Scopes
Still have VX 111 and VX 3
The difference between the Vari X 111 and Vx 111 is noticable, the difference twixt the VX111 and VX 3 is not so noticable , but is apparently in the erector system and a twilight lens system which I have never been able to work out.

The VX111 having a single erector the vx3 having a double [as has the Weavers for years].

I have VX111 on my 30 06 and a VX3 4x14x40 LR with M1 Turrets fitted on my Kimber Varmint.
I used to have a VX3 4,5x14x40 LR with leupold fitted M1 Turrets on one of my 6.5 x55 Sako's but sold it and put a S&B PM11 on there.

All up MHS the VX2 is going to be a better scope the VX11.
    Damn I hope thats decipherable.
