Music: what do you like and dislike? A general thread just for fun
What sort of music do you enjoy (either performing or listening to), and what do you dislike? Try to be as specific as possible. For example, if you say "Rock" then that is a very wide category, so narrow it down if possible.
And also, if you can say "why?" you like or dislike a particular type or music, and maybe list some of your personal faves as recommendations? Okay...
Most of you know that I'm a big classical music fan, including opera and choral, plus most other types, such as symphonic or solo work or trios and whatever.
But I also like blues, modern jazz, classic rock, and some of the more blues-oriented country/western.
I can't stand rap or hiphop although I still can't tell the difference (maybe that's a good thing). I really don't like any sort of folk music, nor do I much care for the more "twangy" CW.
I'll list some specific favorites later.

Some of my parents folk music stuck, but most of it didn't. Still, Phil Och's Pretty Smart on My Part was pretty formative.
Country music. . .can't do it. Most of it very bland musically and dull lyrically. No inspiration contained or conveyed. The Stones did a country cover of their own Honky Tonk Women, and Boingo covered their own Sweat - both of which were good. Seems it takes a rock artist to do good country.
For some reason, jazz/R&B gets under my skin. I pretty much hate it.
I think I want music to wake me up and engage me, where country and jazz put me to sleep - at least when it's not getting on my nerves. Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb engages me AND puts me to sleep. Funny memory there - by coincidence my clock radio alarm kicked on one morning right when the station cued that up. I had to get up in a hurry that morning. . . Pink Floyd ensured that I didn't.
Tried and failed to get into classical. Most of what's in my head are the bits of Beethoven, Mozart, Rossini, and Tchaikovsky that get sound-byted in the mainstream - although the entirety of 1812 did hold a special place for a time. There's a few classically-styled movie sound tracks (e.g.Wrath of Khan) that are burned into the DNA.

Lite Rock from about 1975-1990 - plus some of the newer stuff. About the only semi-hard Rock I kinda-sorta like is "Dead Cat" (Def Leppard) because our daughter listened to it until it stuck with us. We even went to one of their concerts - the only Rock concert we've ever gone to. I'm glad we did, although I don't need to do it again (Not sure about my wife). Greek and Middle Eastern for obvious reasons - and much of "world music" in general.
Most C&W I can't abide, although some of the older stuff that my dad liked (Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, etc) I'll listen to on occasion. Most, but not all Jazz and Jazzy stuff doesn't do it either. I won't even mention (c)rap.

except rap. "Ghetto poetry." Riiiiiight..
when white kids in upscale neighborhoods have to wear their hats sideways and not take off the tags.. droopy britches.. "[women] ain't [fecal matter]"
Yeah. I'll get RIGHT on that..
You are one of them.
I'm a product of the Nevermind generation but I'm not into Nirvana.
When I'm in the shop doing some woodworking, I set the playlist to Alternative and it starts me off with some Awolnation "sail" and winds me through some Black Keys. Keeps me focused on the details.
And I grew up listening to Jazz. My father was a HUGE jazz fan. Lois Armstrong and Benny Goodman were always playing on the tape deck in the car and it grew on me. Thank god the Julio Iglesias my mother always listened to DID NOT stick in my taste.
ETA- I'm also the only guy in Jersey that can't stand Springsteen and thinks he's overrated.

Since I spent a lot of time backstage at the old Ryman Auditotrium in Nashville listening to my aunt play at the Opry and rubbing elbows with the 1950's country artists, I really like the oldtime C&W stuff. I also worked on the pit crew for Marty Robbins for a while when he was racing at Nashville Fairgrounds in the early 1960's. Sometimes he would pull out of a race early on a Saturday night to go and play his spot on the Opry.

Newfoundland music, Irish Folk and classic country are my love
rap shall never grace my playlists
Dislike (HATE): Hip-Hop, Rap, Punk, and Heavy Metal Head-Banger Chainsaw Music

Lindsey Stirling ROCKS.

I graduated high school in '79 so it was always classic rock for me until about 3 or 4 years ago. One day I realized I wanted to put Led Zeppelin and Styx on the back burner and see if there was something new that tripped my trigger.
When I found out that this qualifies as country then I decided there was room for it on my SD card: (I love me some Tom Petty but whenever I listen to this song I find myself turning it up.)
It's easy to find country that sucks but there is a lot of material that is labeled country that makes me ask "Really, because this rocks!"
When I'm working at my desk I turn on Slacker Radio and tune in Alternate Country. Robert Earle Keen, Charlie Robison, Uncle Tupelo, Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earl.
Maybe I'm just getting old.

New Age Music! Most especially a young German composer named "Deuter", and another young American named "Liquid Mind". Deuter, especially, though he composes in a "simple tune manner". He has the classic potential of a Beethoven IMO.
I was never a fan.

If there's a few things I can't stand is the whiny-thug flavors of certain genres. For example......whiny modern country music........whiny angst-riddled hard rock/metal......but melodic and soulful pieces are good.....i.e. Evanescence's My Immortal......some 3 doors down, and the occasional Nickleback tunes. Modern rap that has no lyrical ingenuity and relies on sample music/lyrics from previous artists..........you ain't BASF....you didn't make it better ya schmucko. Classical Rap (haha) to me is Sugerland Gang, Run-DMC, NWA....etc. P-diddy is something I did on the tires of the principal's car......bleh! Boy bands.....bleh!
As for modern symphonic composers......John Williams hands down, and it'll be a sad day in American history when he passes. The man has composed some of if not the most iconic movie soundtracks of my generation. From Jaws to the Imperial March to Schindler's List. For opera singers......I'm in love with Katherine Jenkins!
The Trans Siberian Orchestra can take any music and rock it out...I like that kind of ingenuity.
I can see beauty in cultural music like Islamic and Judaic prayer, Oriental music, and the Sitar of Ravi Shankar.......Celtic harp, violin, and drumming. Spanish Flamenco and Mariachi.......however I draw the line on Mexican Polka! :tooth:
Gun control laws make about as much sense as taking ex-lax to cure a cough.
Lately I've been listening mostly to county and rock, because those are the only radio stations I can pick up on the way to work. At home I favor choosing a random station on Pandora.

Used to be a DJ so I have a soft spot for dance music in particular High Energy, Disco, Eurobeat, Lounge and Electronica.
Not an expert on classical and opera but love the stuff, so for blues, jazz, world music, folks like Fema Kuti from Africa, lots of the folks from Brazil, I love Cesaria Evora from Cape Verde, there a lot of great contemporary musicians from Cuba I listen to like Silvio Rodriguez, Omara Portuondo, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and many others.
Besides all of that I am a great fan of folks like The Eagles, Dylan, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Donald Fagen, Jimmy Hendrix, Ked Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, Ozzy, Kiss, Talking Heads, Eurythmics, The English Beat, Pink Floyd, Clapton, Billy Joel, Elton John, Steely Dan, the Stones, The Beatles, Prince, Marilyn Manson, Madonna and lots more.
REM is one of my favorite contemporary bands, so is Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Sigur Ros, Wilco, Dido, Madness, love The Clash and lots of more genres including, Salsa, Reggae and Rap, soundtracks too.
New Stuff... Fun, Lana del Rey, The Fray, Adele, Ellie Goulding, The Black Keys...
Then there are those that come from Spanish speaking countries, some favorites some are, Joan Manuel Serrat, Toreros Muertos, Mecano, Hombres G, Duncan Dhu from Spain, Enanitos Verdes, Andres Calamaro, Fito Paez, Joaquin Sabina from Argentina, Caifanes,Cafe Tacuba, Jaguares, Guadalupe Trigo from Mexico.
From Puerto Rico, Hector Lavoe, El Gran Combo, Danny Rivera, El Topo, Circo, Vivanativa, La Secta Allstars, Fiel a la Vega...
I VERY seriously dislike the Biber kid.

If you like blues check out this group: Tedeschi Trucks Band. It's a husband and wife. My oldest son introduced me to their music this past weekend. Husband is awesome on the guitar. Here's a link to a youtube video of them. The 2nd link is to a video of John Mayer, B.B. King and Derek Trucks jamming. B.B. is hilarious.

Am I the only person here who likes a good John Philip Sousa march occasionally?
If I had to pick one thing to listen to the rest of my life, it would have to be my all time favorite, Chris Ledoux. 1976 world champion bronc rider. Man it sucks that that guy passed away so young. I would have loved to see more of his concerts and see what his music career would have come to. Some folks don’t know that he pretty much taught Garth Brooks the on stage performing, fireworks shows and upbeat style on stage that Garth was popular for in the ‘90s. After that, Garth pretty much made Ledoux a mainstream performer with the “What you gonna do with a cowboy” song they did together.
I don’t really get into the new country stuff, except maybe a few of the smaller Texas country bands. I’m especially not into the stuff out of Nashville over the last 15-20 years or so. The majority of my music is old country and Texas country. Of course I like Willie, Waylon, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard etc. I also listen to Hank Williams Sr., Tammy Wynette, Jerry Reed, Marty Robbins and the like.....For Texas country, I listen to Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, Kevin Fowler, Charlie Robison and really liked Cooder Graw before that band split up.
For rock, it’ll go from old ‘60s and ‘70s up to some of the newer stuff and hard rock, almost metal music like Metallica, AC/DC, Disturbed, Creed....I say almost metal now. In the 80’s, Metallica was metal. I think compared to today’s music, it’s tame by comparison. Classic hard rock, I think. I also like some CCR and Eagles stuff.
I’m not real big into rap, though. I don't care for the "gangsta" style rap stuff at all. If anything, I like a few songs that I think are funny or somehow stand out as entertaining to me. Like the Macklemore thrift shop song. Cracks me up......This kind of music is sorta like a guilty pleasure, I guess. As is my taste for metal music every now and then. Static X, Drowning Pool and some of the good, ol’ Pantera.
I’m sure there’s a lot more on my Ipod, but that’s the basics. Quite a bit of variety for me.
