FBI Crime Stats released for 2012

Crime in the United States has been published annually by the FBI since 1958. It's about the closest thing to the official crime report for the U.S. that we have. I bought a copy in 1971, when I was considering taking a job in Houston. Now, the report is available online, and the 2012 edition was just announced.

Of course, this report's validity is only as good as the reporting. That means some overpaid, underworked bureaucrats in thousands of municipalities have to report to more overpaid, underworked bureaucrats at the FBI, both of which resent the other, as well as having to work at all. In any case, it's pretty much all we have, and now at least you don't have to pay for it, if you read it online. And the raw data is available in a form that some people might be able to use to reach their own conclusions.
"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history." - Ayn Rand
