Weapon of choice for Deer this fall

bellcatbellcat Posts: 2,040 Senior Member
Even though our tag #'s are down, and I didn't draw an East River tag for 2nd year in a row, we do have 4 West River tags.

I have my Marlin XS-7, 243, sighted in using Hybrid 100 and PRVI SP bullets. I also have the CZ 550, 6.5 Swede shooting 140 SST's ready along with my Marlin 3030 using Speer 170 SP's over LeverEvolution.

Should be enough for 2 antlerless!

What's your recipe for the fall?

I think I'm going to use my 1860-manufactured Pattern 53 Enfield rifle with the 500-grain Minie' bullets and 60 grains of 3-F black powder. Once the smoke clears, I'll be able to see whether or not I hit anything! I'll try the .460" patched round balls this time, and see if they're more accurate than the Minies.

Assuming the weather doesn't go to pot, 1 tag each are allocated to the 1895 Marlin, the 1885 High Wall and the 1874 Sharps...

If the weather DOES go to pot, I'll stack em up with the 6.8 SPC and the .300 WM

    In no particular order:
-Savage 116 in 6.5-284 Norma with 130gr. Swift Scirocco IIs over H-4350
-Kimber Montana in .257 Roberts with 100gr. Swift Scirocco IIs over H-4350
-Ruger American Compact in 7mm-08 with either 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips or Speer 130gr BTs over IMR-4064--Still evaluating loads and accuracy.

-Some kind of muzzle loader or specialty pistol for "Alternative Methods" season--to be announced

Don't plan on an organized hunt, but I'll probably bust a couple in the yard around my garden. Normally I would use my Hershel House .50cal flintlock using 72gr 3f and a .495 patched round ball. This year, though, I think I'll use my New England Fowler, smooth bore, with about 75gr 2f and a .645cal patched round ball. I have an idea this will knock one down flat at 75-100 yards!

Probably my .50 cal Hawken, that I built my self, loaded with 65 grains of Goex FFF, under a .490 patched RB, or my Model 600 Remington 6mm........Robin

I've thought about using the little Mauser, but the recoil on that thing is greater than anything I've ever shot! I had no idea that anything that small could so severely kick you! All that lie I concocked about that little Mauser being Hermann Goering's Daughter, Edda's personal rifle just won't hold water! One shot with it and her shoulder would have been broken :yikes:

I'm not hunting deer. Almost pointless in South Florida and it is an 8 hour ride into Georgia where there are actually OK sized deer.

My pig guns this year will be:

    1. Iron sight - Chicom SKS 20" firing either 123gr Amax over 21gr A1680, or 150 Sierra Gamepoint SBT over 27gr X-Terminator
    2. Scoped - Savage 116FCSS topped with a Leupold Vx-1 3x9x40 firing 165gr Sierra Gamepoint HPBT over 55 - 57gr of H4350
    3. Maybe - CZ 452 in .22 mag and 3x39x40 Simmons .22 MAG scope shooting 40g Remington Accutip V at 2000 fps - Only in an under 25 yard situation
    4. Backup - Weatherby Vanguard I 30-06 topped with a Burris 3x9x40

This is always a difficult decision for me every year. I never know whether I can get away with a handgun, or Ill need a rifle that I can reach out and touch something.

My savage 110 bolt action 30-06 is usually a good choice, with a 165 grain boattail bullet. My carry pistol, an XD 40 can take care of the light work with Hornady 175 grain flexlocks.

Be careful with that. I believe that the DNR doesn't allow handgun hunting with a with a magazine capacity over 8 rounds.

    I'll take a M-70FTW .358 with Sierra 225sbt moly coated over IMR4895, and a 03-A3 .30-06 with Hornady 165 superformance.

Hunting in North Florida just south of the Alabama line.

Hunting North Florida just this side of Georgia. Literally on the Ga line.

CVA Optima black powder pistol this coming weekend.

In another two weeks, either one of my .44 carbines, or my Ruger M77 in .308. Unless one gets within ~40 yds in which case my 4" S&W 29 will finally get to tag one.

I'll bet you haven't even dropped the firing pin on any of those cast bullet loads I sent you. You just might be surprised at how a moderate cast bullet load will tame down a hard-kicking jacketed bullet shooter!

These are some of the regular players from years past. One of them will suffice this year.

Stick and string backed up during firearms season with 30-06 using 150 grain nosler ballistic tips if necessary.
  • twatwa Posts: 2,245 Senior Member
I used to switch up every year for a long time, 300 RUM, 7mm RUM, 7mm Mag, .243, .270 etc.... etc.... anything I saw in the safe that hadn't been bloodied in a while, if ever. Anymore I keep it simple - Remington VLR in .308 topped with a Nikon 4-12 as my primary. And I always bring a back up, and that is a CZ 550 in .30-06 topped with a cheap Bushnell Banner. I shoot well with both and that is the most important thing for me.

or perhaps Remington 760 in 30/06

Dan, Have you tried the Applicacola National Forest ? There are 600,000 acres of woods and black water swamps, that require no permits to hunt, or the Ocala National Forests, which is much closer to you. Robin

That would require time off to go there and explore, that I do not have. I wish! Now if I had a friend or two in the area that could show me around I would be all over it.
