Please educate me on 338 Lapua

Had a chance encounter tonight at class. Seems another parent is in the market to dispose of a Savage 338 Lapua, reloading equipment, 500 bullets, 700 casings, 1000 primers and about 4 pounds of powder. Intrigued as I am a 303, 308 and 30-06 guy, 338 never hit my list, but maybe for something new.
Specs are not complete yet, hopefully soon.
Minimum price is 3600...the gun is apparently a decent piece, but person also is looking to get rid of a stockpile of ammo that really has my interest...22lr, 9mm, 308 and 303...getting out of the hobby and needs the cash.
What say you? $3600 for a rifle and a shot (pardon the pun) at ammo that I'd be happy to have, or is the price too steep for a new "toy"
Ammo is not part of the $3600 figure. Claims to have about 4k plus into the gun.

The Savage rifles themselves run between $1000 and $1900 new that are chambered in .338 Lapua. For $3600, he better have some very amazing glass on that puppy. I really don't see how he would have that much money in the rifle.

Zee or a few other might be able to correct me, but imagine a .300 Win mag and a .50 cal had a son...That would be the .338 Lapua. I have heard folks argue you can get the same performance from 7mm RUM that you can a Lapua. I just don't see it.

Barret's will run about $4,500, a CZ will run you around $3,600, and I have seen the savage go for $2,100 (bare bones)...

If I had the scratch, I would do that deal...well I would try to talk him down a hundred or two. But if it is a decent rifle with scope, with all the ammo it should be worth the deal.

.338 Lapua brass goes for about $2 each new. Lord knows how many times his has been fired. Powder is $25 a pound. 1000 primers for $50. Ammo-- depends. Anywhere from 50 cents to a quarter each. Methinks somebody bought a bunch of stuff at the peak of the shortage/scare thinking it would go up even more and is panicking now.

Maybe he has a real nice case and a Sinclair bipod.....it IS the sellers story after all... The MSRP on a Savage 110 BA in .338 Lapua is in the $2400.00 neck of the woods

Another thing to consider before buying that beast is....do you have a place to stretch it's legs?

This, is a major consideration. Unless you just WANT one.

The .338 RUM yes. The 7mm RUM, no. I would actually give a slight edge to the .338 RUM (or even a bigger edge to the .338 Edge).

Yeah, Both arguments I saw were based on loads that will push the 7mm Rum out to 1500yrds. You really don't have to push a .338 Lapua, It just kinda does it.

I am not familiar with the RUM or Edge, but I'll take your word for it Jerm. I know the .338 win mag comes pretty close, but not with the same bullet weights.

Did state has custom case and a scope I don't recall, a camera name, Nikon maybe.
Yeah, would be more of a want, and a want of the ammo. Hope to hear more soon.
Looked up the prices on the auction sites, and the ones with bids are a bit lower, but I don't have the specs to do apples to apples.
Know the person fairly well, and it does look like they bought at peak and got burned in then end. But knowing them as I do, I also believe they are taking a hit compared to what they spent.
It's more of a morals question I guess; a new toy and supplies for a decent price to possibly aid someone over getting a real good deal.
Long day, tired brain...maybe just over thinking this...tomorrow morning will re-think and re-evaluate.

If you are interested, do your homework and give him a fair price. It just don't sound anywhere near what he is asking. If it is indeed a Nikon scope, it probably shouldn't be on that rifle. Those are only made for hunting. I am not aware of a decent long range Nikon scope.

$3600 buys alot of guns, ammo, and reloading stuff, not just one gun and some stuff, I would shop harder if you have $3600 burning a hole in your pocket right now, there must be a better deal out there.

I have paid a bit to much for a gun before to help a friend out of a jamb.....Just seemed like the thing to do.

There was a guy with a .338 at one of the Texas shoots me, SS3 and bullsi were at. Cool rifle, but it was only a 100 yard range. yes he was the first one on da block to have one there, but other than that.....maybe he was a "Special Operator" :tooth:

I watched him fire it a couple times, but it was more fun watching bullsi bust orange clay birds with his .308 Enfield/Ishapore standing with iron sights @ 100 yards :guns::guns:
