My first Yote!

ZeeZee Posts: 28,177 Senior Member
Well, two to be exact. I've had plenty of opportunities to take coyotes in my life. Just never wanted one bad enough of had a reason to take them. But, a few days ago, a rancher friend of mine approached me with a problem. Seems his new calves have been turning up with chewed ears and sick from running hot. He said he had a coyote and wild dog problem and asked if I'd take care of it. He didn't want his cattle spooked and wanted it done at night. Well, I was peachy on that task. So, I showed up at the ranch after dark with a friend and we got our gear ready. Walking out behind the barn, we looked over the pastures and were discussing a game plan when a couple yotes began singing on the other side of a stock tank about 200 yards away. We snuck through the corrals and got about 150 yards from the tank. I started squeaking with my mouth like a young rabbit and we gazed off into the night with NVGs. Periodically lighting the area up with IR light. About 5 minutes later, I noticed the yotes sneaking along the tank berm trying to flank our position and get down wind. But, they ran into the corral fence (that was the plan) and had to turn and approach us. At about 50 yards, the lead yout turned broadside. I lit her up with the IR and "Pppppffffttthhhh"............dropped her. My partner said the other one was to the right and a bit back. Swinging in that direction, I located him trotting through the high grass and "Pppppffffftttthh".............dropped him as well. Well, we'd been there about 15 minutes and hadn't even turned a light on. YoteHunt12-7-135-Copy.jpg We tried some calling with an electronic caller in several locations, but the wind was howling and only had one other yote show interest. But, we didn't get him. Anyway, guess I finally had a reason to shoot a yote and got to do it my way. That was fun. I will say, these were some nasty coyotes. Not like you see in the magazines, on TV, or up north. The male was mangy and the female was thin coated. But, I'm glad we helped out the rancher. I used the AR with 64gr Gold Dot and it thumped them. Not explosive like a varmint bullet, but they both hit the dirt at the shot. Good times! (And for some reason I can't get the "enter" button to work on this site and create separate paragraphs. Just ain't working.)

Nice work. I guess the heavy recoil of the AR platform blew your face off. Must be a .270 variant. :jester:
Those things do look mangy. I guess I had it in my head you lived out West somewhere where the pelts are generally nicer.

It's OK to show your face, even though you do own a Savage, we wont hold it against you. :tooth:

I have never killed a yote either. They are starting to be a pretty big problem in a lot of Georgia, or so I've heard anyway. I always figured If I see one, I'll kill it because of the reproduction rate. Never have seen one in the woods, though.

Glad ya could help out the rancher, never used it but i guess NV would be the way to go if ya wanted to take care of the hog problem.
Talked to one of the managers of a WMA here, he said theres a yote problem here in central Fla. but like BMI, i havnt seen one yet.

Nice work, sounds like fun, for sure. Nice toys, too. Those dogs sure do look mangy, yuck.
I saw a pic last night of one a guy shot up here, beautiful, thick coat.
I've shot a few of them over the years while deer hunting, they're hard to hit with a slug gun! They almost never stop moving. They're everywhere here, but nowhere. I see the signs, hear them singing, but rarely see them.
A buddy of mine was telling me just last night about a pair of them that live across the creek from his property. A few nights ago, they were on his back porch steps, trying to take out or distract his male chow, so they could get his wife's Pomeranian. :yikes:

I've seen some pretty---er coyotes around. But, nothing to ever be considered pelt worthy. I've even seen some chupacabra looking coyotes running around. Hairless, evil looking, mangy monsters.

You need to hunt some of these 'yotes up here, especially during the winter. I was heading to Scooters house one morning after elk hunting in the area and while driving down the road I saw the biggest yote I've ever seen loping across a field. It's coat was so heavy and thick that from over 200 yards away I could see it flowing and bouncing like the coat on an Irish Setter. That was sure something to see.

The coyotes here are sure nuff different critters than what they grow in Louisiana/Texas. The first one I saw here I would have thought a dam woof had I not known better.

I took a shot at one tonight. He was out about 300 yards, the only gun with a scope was a youth .243 single shot. I shot from seated but came up a little short. Last I saw of him he was headed for the Kansas line.

I remember them having beautiful coats in Montana. Here, they look like big rats.

I talked to the Rancher the next day and he was exceedingly happy that we'd done it so quickly and quietly. With a big smile on his face, he immediately offered up more opportunities on other pieces of land he owns.

    Z,

I don't know which is better, your hunting/shooting ability, your picture taking ability or your descriptive writing. Maybe you should write a book one day. Just a thought.

Anyways, good pics. great writing. Thanks.

These I just ditched. The one was covered in scabs and the other was thin/short haired.

I was was only after them as problem children anyway.

Unfortunately, no. I was hoping he had some problem Axis Deer, but it appears not. He DOES, however, have problem hogs.

So, score another location for hog killing. Woohoo!

I don't have the patience to write a book. Ha!

You've got almost 7,000 posts. We'll just have Sam compile and organize that into a book.......

Can't wait to read the chapter about self defense scenarios and long range tactics for concealed carry operators.....

Or maybe the chapter about door breaching tactics and anger management support groups.....

PS - Nice 'yote hunt.....
