Amish thinking??? Ohio hunting seasons.........

jbp-ohiojbp-ohio Posts: 10,939 Senior Member
I was at Walmart last night, and was going to get a box of WWB .45 to shoot my range officer today. There was at least 20 Amish standing in line at the sporting goods counter getting hunting licenses and tag(s). Half were adults and half were kids 8-12 (all male)....

All of the seasons are about over. Why would they be getting licenses in these numbers this late? Today is the last day of muzzle loader, why wait until the last day??

When do old licenses expire ?

Well my first thought was they already had the meat hanging and so they wanted to be legal. Or maybe the village processor had the G&F snooping around and he told them to do it.
I dunno, seems odd to me too.

They are not going to go to a processor.

My wife always says I'm to negative.................... but I think they were getting tags for the kids to tag deer dad already got, so dad can go again today (the last day)

You would be surprised how many do go to a processor.

More and more have to get a tag since many no longer farm. The law was changed (for a landowners permit) where you have to own at least ten acres and make a certain percentage of your annual income from that land.......

That "make a certain percentage of your income from the land rule" is ing stupid.

Oops.... Tenants must prove 50%, owners do not
Tenants and their children on land on which they reside and from which they derive the majority (more than 50%) of their income from agricultural production on that land - Are not required to have a hunting license, fur taker permit, either-sex deer permit, antlerless deer permit, spring or fall turkey permit or Ohio Wetland Habitat Stamp when they are hunting or trapping on land where they reside.

We're all tenants and if you don't believe me try not paying your property taxes.
    End of thread drift.

The reason I said "Village" processor is because I assume they're not all blacksmiths or Tanners, or even bee keepers or harness makers. So maybe there's a villager who's set up for high volume processing. Deer, Cows, what have you.
In pretty much any society, there is a division of labor. It's much more efficient to have specialization.
I would think most of us do this even in our own households.

Having lived around them most of my life, my first thought is: either they got busted, or someone they know got busted, and they got scared. They're not much for following "English" laws.

Or, maybe they all decided to go rabbit hunting.

That's my immediate gut reaction. I don't think the care a lick about state game laws. They either have deer hanging and someone has or threatened to rat them out, or they got busted outright and told that the deer had better be tagged by sunset.

Ahhhh... I don't follow the seasons anymore. A friend said today was his last day. I assumed it was season end. Must just be back to work for him....

Edit.... That's a weird season. Muzzle loader used to be a week. Monday to Sunday.....

Don't know much about the Amish up in your part of the country, but my good friend who lived in the center of Amish country in Pennsylvania told me that when it came to hunting deer that all religious traditions were forgotten. He told me that all used modern arms, semi-autos, scopes, etc and would sweep through the woods in a formation driving the deer to those waiting for a shot. He said they were pretty thorough and successful at it.

That goes right along with what my late FIL used to complain about. When I would ask if he got a deer, he often wouls answer with "not a chance, the amish already go anything close to legal in my area. Said they would all have tags and fill each and every one of them. The good part was that if you didnt mind driving a ways you were out of their hunting area.

Same here. (This is all 20 years ago when I regularly saw them while hunting, they are the worst trespassers) They have 1100's with Hasting cantilever rifled barrels, extended tubes to make them 9 shot, and scopes. Latest and greatest compound crossbows, with carbon fiber bolts.

The tech they use is all over the spectrum. They don't want an electric line ran to the house, but the will have generators and solar arrays. They will ride a bike to work, and talk on the cell phone while doing it..........

Where I grew up, there were, and still are, very few deer. Compared to the terrain. About an equal mix woods and lush farm ground. Beautiful rolling hills, woods, fields, and pastures, it should be a deer mecca. It's not. The Amish hunt openly during season, but they also hunt year round. If you know where to look, you'll find deer hanging year round.
During season, one of them will get permission, then show up with 30 people, slaughter every deer they can, and split.

There is an Amish limestone company that buys 5-20 acre parcels of junk land. Then they allow all Amish to hunt it. How do you hunt 5 acres of land with 20 people?

By trespassing on all the neighboring land!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't semi-auto's illegal in Pennsylvania. I have friends in that state that told me that. Also that the Amish are not known for following "English" rules.

You should watch them fish at Tappan ( I know that you know where that is). 15-20 on a pontoon. Every fish brought in goes in the bucket no matter how small. Hey, they bought that minnow that fish ate. They're keeping it!

Tappan has a 9'' limit on Crappie, and the last pontoon full I watched drift by me kept every one caught, even if it was half the legal size.....

This is all very good information for someone looking to hunt out that way soo, possibly in the market for about a 10 acre parcel of DECENT land. Last thing I need is to get into a war with my Amish "neighbors." (FYI, keeps your eyes out for a decent land strip out your way for me, would ya?)

You bet! The one good thing, Amish are cheap. If the land is over, mmm, 3k an acre, they're out. That's why I'm heading 25 min. south of "home". Very few Amish.
My aunt is talking about selling a 50 acre parcel in Tyndal, OH.:tooth:

The further south of I-70 you get, the cheaper ground is...... generally.

Wow - I've been scanning hunting properties out your way and there is simply nothing worth mentioning to be had under about $6K/acre. It makes perfect sense that the only way you get anything on land like that is to either 1) get very lucky or 2) as has been suggested, use it as a trespassing ingress route onto someone else's land.

Very nice for the price, for sure. You can definitely find some useable tracts in Ohio. Just gotta nail one down.
