Rifle Cartridge Question: The 7mm-08

bfunkbfunk Posts: 113 Member
I've been looking into this cartridge, it seems to be held in high regard in some circle, but how do you say it?

A: "Seven mm oh eight"
B: "Seven mm ought eight"
C: Something else

What do you say?

    "Seven, oh, eight"

I hunt with one exclusively, I love it.

Yep Seven mm oh eight - great cartridge in so many ways. Shotgunshooter is not only one satisfied man if shooting only one rifle and choosing the rifle to be 7mm08, but he knows the killing results of 7mm cartridges. He has great ballistics, great bullet choice, great terminal ballistics and light recoil to boot. Mighty hard to beat in a single package.

Can you elaborate on what it is that you love about it?

I can't speak for SS3, but I can tell you that I personally love having a cartridge with considerably less recoil than a 30-06 that will kill a deer (and much bigger game) just as well. It's got a nice trajectory in a 140 gr. bullet and I've personally dropped animals up to 600 lbs. with it. That's a lot to love in my mind.

Oh, yeah - and it's accurate. Getting .66" groups @ 100 yards with the Barnes TTSX.

I wish I had some long drawn out list of reasons, but I'm pretty easily pleased so here goes:

First off, it was a gift, so I didn't really have a choice, but Dad is pretty good at reading what I'm into gun-wise.

So, what I like about it: A bit less recoil than the .308 (I was very recoil sensitive when I first started shooting with the 7mm-08), decent factory ammo selection (even though it's usually a couple of dollars more pricey than the .308), I know that once I start reloading it that I have many options available to me, it's very accurate (I once got a .348" group at 100 yards with Federal "Fusion" ammo, I haven't shot it for groups since then). I only hunt deer at under 200 yards with it right now, but I know with proper bullet selection and careful shot placement that I'm good to go for any non-dangerous game in North America and probably ALMOST anything in the world that I'd care to shoot.

Downsides are ammo cost and ammo availability (sometimes I can't find it at, say, Wal Mart). For me the upsides beat the downsides. I've thought a few times about getting another deer rifle (.25-06, etc), but this one does it well enough that I don't feel the need. Plus, I don't shoot groups out of my deer rifles as a pass-time too much anymore, so for the rifle that comes out only to hunt my 7mm-08 does the trick perfectly.

I want to try some other rifles this deer season just because I can (AR with 70gr soft points, shotgun with slugs, M1 Garand), but if I can't get ready in time you can bet that the Remington 700 in 7mm-08 will be coming out of the safe.

    A. 7mm-08. It's a 308 Win. or 7.62x51 Nato necked down to .284 or 7mm. It's about the ballistic's twin of the 7x57 Mauser.

Edited to Add: It being about the same as a 7x57 is a really good choice around my part of the country, especially for someone recoil sensitive. I think it's a little better choice for a teenager or adult who is sensitive to the recoil. With 120-140 grain bullets it will kill better than a 100 grain in a .243. And it is good for longer ranges as it will have more down range energy than the 6mms or .257s. There's a lot of great cartridges out there, and the 7mm-08 is one of the better ones.

Yea, because if you had made the choice back then, it would have been a .243!!! You think we give Snake a hard time about his .270? That would be nothing compared to the ribbing we would have gave out to you (just kidding- sort of). You need to thank 41magnut every day for his wisdom.

Oh, and to answer the question... B.

I still want a .243, particularly the .243 that took my first buck (with one shot I might add). Hell, this year I'm going to take a deer with a .223!

(I just know DoctorWho is going to give me about this picture, it's almost 7 years old and I can't find the one without the face blurred out)

For good measure, here's a pic of my 7mm-08 that I found.

See SS3? The man has been driven nuts over his caliber selection. He is laughing maniacally over the mere mention of the t-w-o-s-e-v-e-n-t-y (he can't understand what we are saying if you spell it out).

Think of how your life would have been different. Your dad saved your butt!

I use to look down on the .243 Winchester because of all that I had read. Now that I have two of them.......I'm really liking this cartridge. Haven't killed anything with them, but seriously plan to rectify that lapse. This is a neat little cartridge.

You do realize that, because of your mention, we are going to be subjected to yet another boring rant on the cartridge, right? He interjects the damn cartridge into darn near every thread. Even when the subject has absolutely NOTHING to do with it. Thanks. Yet another thread I will be forced to ignore because of his raving.

Keep in mind that this is the same guy that gave me a dreaded 9mm chambered 1911, something people have poo-poo'd here for years until the cool kids starting wanting them too!

Also, BP, I've shot 4 deer with the .243 and the few that ran didn't go far. This is all with factory 100gr Winchester Power Points out to about 150 yards on TX deer.

Boring Rant? Some of us would say there isn't much that's more boring than a .308. See there, I didn't mention .2.... whatever it was.........................

Hell, at this point I may buy a "cartridge that has a seven in the middle and a two at the start and a 'chester at the end and a zero somewhere in there" just to piss off people on this forum! I might even *gasp* reload for it!

9mm 1911's are actually pretty sweet. I am on my second one. I also have a 9mm x 23 which is beyond sweet. Those 45acp diehard guys don't know of what they speak.

Don't you need those 7 rounds for your deer this season? (Sorry, slow pitch and all. Couldn't resist.)

Give me a ported firearm, and ammo, and $20 bucks, and I'll think about it. For $50 I'll do it in my zebra print triathlon suit
