Cartridges based on the .308 Winchester case.

And more specifically, can be loaded using the .308 case and proper sizing dies.

In other words, if one has .308 brass, what factory cartridges can one use this brass to load for?

I know of the:

.243 Winchester
.260 Remington
7mm-08 Remington
.308 Winchester (obviously)

Those are the ones I know for sure. But I also know that the .338 Federal and .358 Winchester are BASED on this case but don't know if you can actually USE .308 brass to load these two. Or any others out there.

So, what all can one do with .308 brass? Gotta keep my future options open, ya know.

.25 Souper. Basically a .25/08. That is a pretty neat round.

Befor I built the .25-06 I looked into that one. Sounded pretty cool. But the fact that it is a wildcat turned me away from it due to cost of dies and finding a reamer to make the barrel. But thanks.

.358 Winchester, maybe. bear tracker would know what you can make with it. I'm sure that probably some of the others can be made with .358 brass, but maybe not all. The problem is that sometimes when you try to neck down or up you end up with too short a cartridge. This is not really a big problem, other than it could erode the chamber to far back and then when you had factory spec brass it may cause a problem with the extended neck area. This is the problem with making .270 brass from 30-06 or maybe I'm backwards on that.

So, it CAN be sized up from a .308 Winchester case with nothing but a sizing die? Cool, that's good to know. Thanks.

Then there is the .338 Federal. That is another good one.

I think some folks were cutting down .308 or 30.06 and making .45 acp shotshells.

That takes a little more than just a sizing die. :silly:

I take it you have a free source of .308 brass that you want to play with.

.338 Federal all the way! Chamber it in a lightweight, compact rifle for thick woods elk and black bear.

Actually, the only limit is bullets. If they make good bullets for any diameter then any brass can be necked up or down to make a different wildcat cartridge. Or as my old buddy at work used to say, he always wanted to neck a coke bottle down to a phonograph needle.

    .338 Federal all the way!

Payton Miller worked up some loads for it here...

Dan Johnson was one of the first to test it out on game. He did one up the pooper on a whitetail. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find it. My search-fu skills are lacking. I hope someone else can find it.

Now I did it. I am a victim of my own enabling. I have been wondering what to take black bear hunting next year. I guess I have my answer. :bang:

There's often a little more to sizing down a neck than just squishing the brass in a die. Depending on the degree of squishing required the metal forming the neck can get thicker, requiring a neck-turning operation as well. Also, the more you work brass, the more brittle it becomes, requiring an annealing operation to restore softness.

And that gets you into time required and money spent on extra equipment.

I get the temptation - you've got a access to a 55 gallon drum of once-fired .308 match brass are pondering the horizons. . .and that's fine. Just be aware that while the brass may be free, the lunch probably isn't.

I sure hope management is reading this. They should be hitting these manufacturers and distributors for big bucks!!! I don't know how many threads get started with "Well, I have 5 pieces of brass..." and end with a new firearm purchase.

308 case is a wonderful case to work from, great cartridges are worked off of that case. I will have a very good balance when my 7mm08 comes in along with my already 358Win that pushes the 225gr Accubond at 2576fps with TAC producing 3315ft pounds of energy and can handle the 250gr bullet very well pushing the Partition at 2412fps producing 3212ft pounds of energy. Two very significant big game loads for such a short and efficient case. These two cartridge (7mmo8 & 358Win) allow me to have a lot of versatility when it comes to game I can take.
