1997 Chevy 1500. Body control module?

A friend of mine's truck needs a new body control module, he thinks. The keyless remotes are sending a signal, but the truck doesn't recognize them. His blower motor shorted out, taking the wiring harness and multi-function switch out in the process. He got those replaced at a dealership last week, but now this problem with the remotes started. He took it back to that same dealership, but they didn't volunteer much information. They told him it was probably "that thing under the dash." I'm sure they just wanted him to let them take it back into the shop for some more $$$, but that's not really an option for him right now.
So, is he barking up the right tree, you think, or is there something else he might need to check first? And if he gets one aftermarket, will he need to take it back there for programming, or is it plug and play?
Thanks.

Have one of the DIY parts places like Auto Zone check the trouble codes- - - -they do it for free. If he's got a bad BCM there will be a code set indicating that it has failed. There is a receiver assembly for the "smart key" signal mounted on the steering column near the ignition switch, and it must be programmed to recognize proximity to the key with the electronic chip in it. It's either a dealer service, or some of the bigger locksmith shops are equipped to do the programming. He should try another dealer, if possible- - - -sounds like the one he's working with couldn't find his butt with both hands! If he's only having problems with his keyless remotes, there's a programming procedure available on several internet sites- - - -no need to go to a dealer for that service! They are specific for some vehicles, so be sure to download the right set of key fob programming instructions.

Thanks, Jerry. Is that receiver assembly something different from the BCM? Sounds like it is, I'm just trying to clarify.
