Here is the homework one of my staffs daughters brought home last night. ( Daughter is 11)

To solve the question you are only allowed to use a pencil and paper, no electronic aids.

Her and her daughter spent 90 mins on the puzzle and didn't get an answer.

Took me less than 2 mins to work it out.

Time yourself and see how long it takes.

You go to a beach.
At the beach there are fish, dogs and people.
Between them they have 56 legs, 48 eyes and 16 tails.
How many people, fish and dogs are at the beach?

After I gave her the answer she texted it to her daughter at school as the daughter lost a lot of sleep last night worrying about it.
Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

One person, three fish, and half a dog.

    Took me 2.7 seconds.

    What did I win?

I think you're short on some tails? 4 fish & 8 dogs give 12 tails Orch is looking for more tail than that. Ain't that just like him?

    I get

    6 fish
    8 people
    10 dogs.

Took about 6 minutes but then I used a pen instead of a pencil so maybe I cheated?
    That's all I got.

I was cooking supper when I did that. Probably got my measurements messed up with the math, but not with the food!

    8 people, 10 dogs, 6 fish...

    And the math...

There are 48 eyes, which means there are 24 individuals.

There are 16 tails. Humans do not have tails, therefore: 24 - 16 = 8 humans, remainder 16 individuals.

Humans have two legs, while dogs have four but fish have none. There are 56 total legs, eight humans have 16 total legs = 56-16 = 40 remaining legs. Dogs have legs and fish do not. 40 legs / 4 dog legs = 10 dogs.

    24 individuals - 8 humans - 10 dogs = 6 fish

    Answer:

    8 humans
    10 dogs
    6 fish

Took me about 2ish minutes, but being at work, I got distracted a couple of times.
Fun problem. I enjoy these, but my wife hates them. This is how she sees them:
