firstweekend2014Woodhill115_zps0861e6b9.jpg

.....Then it touched it lightly with my foot and it got all vicious and went into defensive mode.....curled up into a ball. I was lucky to escape with my life!

firstweekend2014Woodhill118_zps6c1b1f98.jpg

firstweekend2014Woodhill134_zps993661f6.jpg

firstweekend2014Woodhill133_zps78520f92.jpg

These ones are a lot bigger...........

firstweekend2014Woodhill106_zpsb1074cf0.jpg

Saw the rump of a deer poking out of a 'toi toi' bush about 200yds down a track so I snuck in to about 30yds.............lost sight of the animal so waited...after 5 mins I gave a low whistle with the camera ready and snapped this pic.......

firstweekend2014Woodhill087_zps61de3788.jpg

Ran across a young guy accompanied by his father and grandfather on a block, Kid got his firearms licence in the mail the day before his hunt. Spoke to them at the carpark and found out that after many years of following his dad/G.dad around, he was finally slipping his leash and going to hunt alone. Gave him a few pointers about the block............he turned up at the carpark just on dark with a grin from ear to ear. Drove him back in to pick up his first solo deer.

firstweekend2014Woodhill081_zps5a965f39.jpg

These guys scored a nice Fallow buck on the first day........

firstweekend2014Woodhill092_zpsec548a8f.jpg

firstweekend2014Woodhill020_zps96ceec9e.jpg

Caught this little fella on the road...........cute little thing.

3rdweekendwoodhill2014036_zps80dee93b.jpg

Another successful hunter. After picking him and his animal up and taking him back to his car I told him where there was some fresh pig sign and he went back to get some bacon.........came out with a 60lb porker........

3rdweekendwoodhill2014043_zps3fc06b23.jpg

One of the biggest bodied bucks I have seen for a couple of years........the nose is 5'11" of the ground and its legs were still touching.

3rdweekendwoodhill2014046_zps9ef6df04.jpg

Found the deer............where's the hunter?

3rdweekendwoodhill2014050_zps244e4f52.jpg

Wow, looks like beautiful country to hunt, fish, hike, camp, and just be alive in. Is there ever a time of year they let folks overnight camp on that beach and maybe do a little surf casting?

No problem. You can probably see why I love that place. Every time I drive in through the gates, it feels like I am coming home. There is always something to see............if you look.

The beach is public. I used to head up the beach in my Landrover towing my 12' boat and stay in a tent for 2-3 days fishing and just lazing around. Surfcasting, launching the boat through the surf, spearing flounder in the surf. Big fires on the beach using driftwood, drinking beer while watching the sun go down into the sea.

That part of the coast is where we fish the charter boat..............When I die, I want my ashes scattered off the coast.

Hmmmm, food for thought for sure. What are the temps like this time of year? How about the temps in February?

Daytime high in Feb averages about 20-25 deg .......Celsius...( about 68-77 of them Fahrenheit thingies)
Temps at the moment are about 13-15 daytime and 8-10 Celsius at night.

Feb is the last summer month for us........camping up there at that time of year is perfect.

Feb is usually when I've enjoyed about all the Winter I can stand and I'm ready to bug out. Again, interesting food for thought.

Do you need some help digesting the 'food for thought'...........................?

How about this. BH and I are planning a trip in Oct/Nov to spend a week killing goats/deer/possums etc and doing some ballistic testing with calibres from 204, 222, 7mm08, up to 375H7H......

There is space in the jeep..............Temps are normally warming up........Kiwi gals are dusting off their summer clothing.......the fishing on the charter boat is at its best that time of year......I have free time as its nearing the end of the flower season........specials on airfares are starting to hit the travel agents.........the only downside is that I may have to draft you into helping with a few bird culls...........wait........that's not a downside!

Thanks for sharing. You live in a beautiful place, abounding with game. I especially liked the bunny, looks a lot like a cotton tail, could it be? I have a new crop of them, about that size, under my front porch. I know that Australia has some nasty ones but I have never heard, does NZ have snakes? Inquiring minds want to know. No snakes at all Robin. Bout the only thing we have that is poisonous is the Katipo spider.....That's the good news. The bad news is they live in sand dunes.........just like the ones in the last two pics. It is from the same family as your Black Widow Spider.
I have only ever seen 2 in the last 40 years and they are an endangered species.

I saw some cottontails when I was last over and they look exactly like our rabbits but ours seem to be a little bigger.

Alec, Stay away from the mushroom with the red or orange top, and white or cream colored parts on top, and gills under the cap. That is a fly amanta(sp?), and it is deadly poison, with no antidote IIRC. I didn't know that they were spread world wide, but I'm not surprised. They are propagated by spores, that are microscopic, and float on the wind currents. My Basset puppy discovered one of the baby rabbits in the yard, and tried to sneak up on it. It saw her and made a mad dash for the fence, with her hot on its heels. She has the right idea, now if I can only get her to bark, when she runs them. Keep yer powder dry........Robin

Our Cottontails are small. However our Western Jack Rabbits are much larger as are our Southern Swamp Rabbits. The far North Hares are bigger but I've never seen one for myself so I can't say for sure how much.

BTW what city would I fly in to?

How do I enter the ballot Orchid, is it hard to be drawn and what are the chances of success?, I've seen lots of deer over the last few years but never with a rifle in my hand, How do I apply?
  • orchidmanorchidman Senior Member Posts: 8,301 Senior Member
Depending on how many apply, you have about a one in three/four chance of being drawn. Will PM you details.... If you do get a ballot you can come and bunk down at my place the night before and save yourself a long drive the day of your hunt.
