"Alternate startup drive...partition..." Do you know how stupid I am? I suppose you'll tell me it's a good idea to back up all my photos and stuff too. Hell, I reload on a single stage press!
Well, you're one up on me in that arena. I need the Rosetta stone to figure what that means as well....LOL

Sorry, but i don't do laptops. No need for them.

but i just treated myself to my first new mac - an 27" iMac. Its maxed to the hilt.

Whatever you do, all i can say is to get a SSD and a big one if you can afford one.

A friend at work has faster internet connection so i had I'm reconfigure my SSD for a dual boot. I have some Solid Modeling software that i wanted to use in Bloatware Windows.
But my mac boots in about 4~6 SECONDS flat. that includes windows too. I won't go back to a mechanical drive now, its only used for backups.

Also, if you have any peripherals that connect via USB, i would think about upgrading them too. USB 3 is sooooo sweet and fast too. If you use them a lot, it could be worth it - time wise.

just a comment. I was using, up to a few months ago, a Mac Pro tower "quick silver" G4/1.25 ghz mac tower. This has the Motorola processor. I bought it 2nd hand. Originally it was used in one of our high schools and some guy bought a truck load of them. i got it from him. These were discontinued in 1999 so you can't say they don't work or last. I only got rid of it since none of the OS was being supported anymore and that included browsers.

good luck in whatever you choose.

This one has the SSD already. I asked the sales guy to sell me a Mac. He turned the display model completely off, hit the power button, and in about 6 seconds it was up and running. He then typed in a command and opened every program on the computer at once. I was sold.

This one also has all usb 3.0. Which is handy since my phone uses 3.0 as does my external HD.

So far I am loving it.

Apple devices are for people who can only learn to use one button.

That way I can use both my pecking fingers on said button. Twice as effective if you think of it that way...

I have a "Mirrored-door" model with the same processor, a G5 tower and a Macbook-Pro 17" with an Intel processor and purchased them all used from an online reseller for 1/5 the price of new. I do this because a have a lot of outdated, expensive software I don't want to replace, so I buy used. They all come with a warranty and have worked fine.

I would have kept mine, but w/o any security updates on the browsers and OS, i didnt want to push my luck. Even using it as long as i did, i havent had any issues. Also, i just wanted a new toy. I really wanted the new Mac PRO, but didnt want to spend another grand for a good monitor. For now, this will be good for at least anther 10 years or at least until they stop supporting the OS.

I know how you feel about older software. I installed my old version of Inventor and was surprised it worked on W7. Im also going to try and install my Solidworks and see how that functions on my Mac too. I also installed the V 1 of HALO to check and it runs great too.

i was going to have my G4 mirrored door case recycled, but from what some friends have said, there are some that will take the cases and use them to build PCs. Everything is still in good working order but i know many people have no use for a 10+ y/o PC.

I reckon I am the exception to the rule, because I prefer Windows. Now, I don't like Windows 8 at all, but 7 still has a lot of life in it. Not to mention most of the software I use runs on Windows only.
