Almost had a gator today.

Was fishing in the canal behind the house I am staying at and caught this on my frog. About a 5 footer. About 2' away he spat the lure out. It was fun looking him in the eye and letting him know where he stood in the food chain. I'm in Florida City for a while might have to meet up with some locals.

Kept it straight and was hauling him. 20lb test didn't seem overly stressed but yeah there was a bit of a fight. I probably would have needed a good long leader to haul him onto shore.

Have fun, but remember they are protected and its a big fine for harassing them.

20lb test is pretty heavy line for the canals. If you have time try 8 or 10 lb test with a 20lb flourocarbon leader for snook in the canals.

Snook are good eating. Used to come down a few times a year in the 80's with my deep sea fishing gear, my freshwater fishing gear, my diving gear and my canoe. I would stay around Pompano so everything was convenient. Diving across the street, charter boats in Lauderdale, 45min to the everglades for 10lb bass. These are more drainage canals to the swamp not like Lauderdale. Down at Turkey Point for a month or so.
