As for big game, I've made a couple at or near 300 yards. I wasn't able to get an accurate measurement, though. All were with high powered modern center fire rifles.
Gun control laws make about as much sense as taking ex-lax to cure a cough.
Back in the mid 80s I killed two doe while culling at right around 400 yards. They were trotting along in an open field. I shot them with a 6mm with a 100 graim Game Kings.
But these are the exceptions. Most of what I have killed has been at or under 100 yards.
The second deer I ever killed was at 40 yards and my first hog was at 30 yards. Everything else has been between those extremes and most around 50-100 yards although I have shot a few hogs between 100-200 yards.

Antelope - 444 yards, 6mm Rem
Whitetail - 379 yards, .270 Win
Elk - 110 yards, .270 Win
Fox Squirrel - 85 yards, 22LR
I once got a pheasant with a 12 ga at what we could best make out to be ~80 yards, although it traveled for another 100 or so before it decided I'd actually hit it. As a rule, I don't like pushing a shotgun much past 45-50 yards, but there's exceptions to every rule.
As a young teen, I practically specialized in sky-busting wood ducks with a .410 pump. I really couldn't tell you how far the farthest was, but I made more than a few that I doubt I've equaled with a 12 ga.

I've also made my closest-ever shot with that same rifle/ammo combo, also on a feral hog. That one was at about 15 feet. The scope was obviously useless at that distance, so I held the rifle "gangsta style" and let the lead fly. :tooth:

Coyote--525 yards using a 30-06--distance measured using my hunting partners range finder (best shot I ever made on an animal..classed as vermin here)
Moose--75 yards using 8mm mauser open sights
Black Bear--50 yards over registered bait site using .308
I am horrible with a shotgun on flying birds
Just noticed after posting that this is my 200th post..not bad for a lurker :P
Got a crow once at 298 lasered yards.
Jackrabbits at 325 yards with a .243 and at 97 steps with a .357 magnum.
A bobcat at 178 yards with a .30-30 win.
Deer was right at estimated 75 yards with a 30-06 and my one and only Elk was shot from a long through the trees 65 yards with a .300 Savage.
I have never hunted game where a longer shot was possible.
I've probably dropped several Whitetails at 125-150 yards, but certainly nothing longer than this. Remember, too, I'm pretty well going to use a flintlock for whatever hunting I do (I should say DID, because I don't care much about it any more except maybe busting squirrels with my little .32cal Squirrel Rifle.)
Of course it took me about 20 shots per "BIRD" but i did kill at least two.
And NO! They weren't Whopping Cranes. :tooth:
