Just My Luck

Well I paid my money for my lease this year and my son in law and I had planned on going out and building a couple of tree blinds and getting the existing blinds fixed up and putting out a couple more feeders and changing the batteries in the feeders that are already in place and filling them all with corn. We've had a couple feeders going all summer but it's time to get them all going now. But, it's been raining about every day since the first of September and it's like a lake out there right now. Heck, it's been too wet to even go out to the range the last two weeks. So it looks like the best laid plans are faltering, and we'll be playing catch up as usual.

Anybody else got this problem?

Yep, this time last year it was pretty dry, now the WMAs we go to are flooded, at one the water was over my knees and that was on the road, all the drainage ditches have about 1 - 2' water and those are one block from my house.

I think its rained here every day for about 3 years.....raining right now! It's so wet I can't get corn out of the field, and I'm in the "hurt locker" for corn to grind!

Quite dry here. I planted my food plots yesterday thinking we were gonna get rain today. No rain unfortunately.

Sorry to hear the weather isn't cooperating. But to turn lemons into lemonade put away the rifles and go fishing. After all, you've got a lake. :tooth: No venison but you could end up with sashimi.

Don't laff too quick Craig, the back of our place is bordered by Karankawa Creek, which is more like a small river and gets full of Redfish and Speckled Trout and other good fish, Only problem is when it's wet like this brackish water fish like that don't hang around too much because it gets too fresh (Not salty enough for em). But during those times you might get into some nice channel cat.

Karankawa Cleek sounds Japanese. Maybe catch some koi. Just like catfish, only plettieah.

Just the opposite problem here. Hot and dry. Supposed to be in the 90s tomorrow. According to my trail cam the deer have gone strictly nocturnal. The acorn crop looks mediocre at best.

I feel your pain, Snake. But I am NOT going to complain about rain in Texas!

I was out in it all weekend, part on the hunting lease. Get some rubber boots!

Our feeders have been going for a while now and we were going to top them off this weekend but rain kept us from it. The other two guys I hunt with are going to try again next Thursday to take care of it.

"Slanty", the Karankawa were a tribe of Indians (Native Americans in the "politically correct" lingo) who inhabited the Texas Coast from about Galveston down to the Rio Grande River. That's where the creek name came from....the Indians. Does sound a little "Japanese", doesn't it! The Karankawa were a little bigger than most American Indians, and the early explorers noted that lone Indians had a habit of standing dead still on the beach for hours staring out into the Gulf of Mexico for some reason. No explanation ever given what they were staring at. Not a recognized tribe at this point in time....no survivors to speak of I think, but I could be wrong.

Yeah it has that ring to it, but it's actually American Indian. The Karankawas were a tribe here in Texas along the coastal areas. They were known to be cannibalistic. Cabeza de Vaca and his men witnessed this. The Karankawas had captured some of his men and de Vaca and the rest of his party said they killed, cooked, and ate some of the captives.

You can still find their old campsites digging along the bay at the top of the bluffs around here. The Karankawas were also Giants in their time. The men were said to average about 6 feet in height, which was exceptionally tall back in that time.

Edited to Belatedly add: I just saw woodsrunner's post above. Everything he said is right on with what I've been taught. Rich, I know a guy here that was an Eagle Scout and is really into Native American Artifacts and history, and he is always digging around the bluffs along the bays. He has a bunch of arrow heads and other artifacts. I think you and Nick would get along really good and I think Nick has delved into Muzzle Loading too. And he's a Traveling type guy too. I think you'ld get along really great. If you ever come through here again stop and I'll introduce you to your twin, LOL!!!

Several years ago we had so much rain around our lease that a friend's feeder was sitting in a foot of water and his camera caught pictures of pigs swimming around it looking for corn.

You're right on Bullsi, I should have my mouth washed out with soap for even hinting at complaining about rain. I've seen enough drought here to know better than that. But it is coming at a slightly inconvenient time for deer hunters. Oh well, it's Texas and you take what's dealt you and keep quiet or you may wish you'd never heard of weather,

Finally, it's dried up enough and my son in law is taking off tomorrow so we'll be going out to put some corn in the feeders, tighten up the fences around the feeders, and build a couple of tree blinds so son in law can bow hunt. I will get my portable blind set up where I want it and kill the wasp that I know are in the permanent blind and fix one of its windows that fell out. Things are pickin' up right nicely now. I'm taking the 06 in case Porky shows his face.

We haven't made it out yet. My son in law got called in to work that day and we blew it off. Maybe this next week. I got my old hunting car running and I'll go out there my self if he can't, but first I need to get the old battleship inspected before I get out on the Hiway with it. You can get by here in town, but out on the Hiway the DPS will hang you. Since I just got it running Friday night, I didn't have a chance to run it by the inspection place Saturday yet.

Went out yesterday evening and my old hunting car broke down right in the middle of my shooting lane. I did get one feeder up and running and worked on my blind, but the car is right in the way, and I didn't have any help to move it. didn't have any help to deal with it today either so I'll have to deal with it best I can tomorrow after hunting.

Cabeza de Vaca means Cow's Head...strange name. I don't think we have an English equivalent.
