In the book, it's "....the rotten sweetness of a prostitute." Or words to that effect. The movie code in that era forbade the mention of "prostitutes". And in the book, the "gambling" front at Geiger's bookstore isn't gambling, but pornography. Which also couldn't be mentioned in the 1940s movies.

The movie is nothing at all like the book, and the movie is pretty much hopeless so far as plot goes. It's a good (excellent) read, but doesn't offer any clues in understanding the movie.
