Baltimore crime increasing, police stay away

samzheresamzhere Posts: 10,923 Senior Member
Here's an article from the local CBS affiliate about how crime is increasing in west Baltimore, more murders and shootings and other crimes rampant. And the police simply not taking any preventive or followup actions.

This is exactly what I thought would happen. The average street cop, and let's assume the cop is a straight-arrow good and decent cop, is afraid that taking any action might be considered "illegal" by the city leadership and will be charged with some sort of trumped up socially correct crime.

So police are simply driving by and not stopping to deal with street thugs. Each time they exit their cars in certain areas, a mob surrounds them, too. So why bother? Just cruise along and ignore trouble. If you don't do anything you can't be charged for excessive force.

People living in west Baltimore who complained about over-policing and too much cop presence are now finding out the consequences: No cops at all. The rank and file cops there seem to have gotten the message from their leadership and administration: Anything you do might be construed as wrong and find yourself charged. Leaders there shouldn't be surprised at the expected reaction.

This is no surprise, considering there is downright hostility from the Baltimore city government including the Chief of Police. Personally I think the officials expected this and will use it as an excuse for federal takeover.

They still pale in comparison to Chicago in # of shooting/killings. The feds should start there.

The inmates are running the asylum in Baltimore. Given the total unwillingness of the voters there to understand the leadership problems, I can't see it being anything but chaos, for a long time.

Hey, they voted for it, Democrat liberals running the show for 50 years. Now coming home to roost. And I don't blame the street cops one bit.

They complain an unfair majority of blacks are incarcerated and are shot by police ................well my answer to that is they commit a disproportionate amount of the crimes , what do they expect the stats to show?????

If there hasn't been mass police resignations already, they should happen soon. Anybody with any other career skills should bail, and those with no other way to make a living should move WAY out of town- - - -maybe out of state!

Rush Limbaugh had a funny post today -- in San Francisco, black women are only 8% of the population but account for nearly half of all arrests of females. He joked that SF cops are therefore racist.

There is always a cry about all the black with prison records or still incarcerated, far more than the percent of blacks in the population. But if you check the stats, blacks commit far greater percent of felonies than whites. And the percent in jail or prison is about the same as the percent that commit the crime.

If you can't do the time... etc.

And no, I'm NOT prejudiced against blacks or Hispanics or polkadotted Martians. I honestly don't give a damn what someone looks like. I am however cognizant of a far greater percent of blacks who are involved in illegal stuff. And I think that most reasonable people think the same.

How to prevent this? Don't use crack or sell it or steal or rob or beat up people. Spend your time reading to your children after you've worked a solid 8hr shift. Spend time playing ball with your friends or kids and don't hang on street corners and do drugs. Duh.

In Chicago, it seems like it's the thugs/dealers shooting rival thugs/dealers. Perhaps the city should start a free ammo day for warring gangs. To be used against convicted felons/gang members only.

I am delighted at the situation in Baltimore. It is precisely kind of city anyone who has ever voted for any Democrat, even once, for any reason, richly deserves. I hope it gets a helluva lot worse before it gets better. My fondest wish is for the few remaining good people of Baltimore - not the thugs but the hard working, tax paying good people of the city, all dozen of them, to riot over the lack of order. The irony would be delicious. Seriously, if the all residents abandoned the city and all of Baltimore burned to the ground, and the whole city simply disappeared, who would miss it? Not me.

If the cops are not doing their job they should be fired. Why pay someone to do nothing?

They should quit and let the liberal politicians try to keep order. These crooked jackwagons deserve exactly what's happening.

Well they just need to take a page out of Chicago's great mayor's playbook. Rahm Emanual has the best idea and just make stronger gun control laws ... we all know while criminals will break every other law on the books they'd never dare break a gun law ...

Baltimore residents don't want the cops around. So the cops protect the ambulances taking away the wounded and the coroner's vans taking away the corpses. That's what the residents wanted, right?

The cops are apparently doing the job that they were asked to by the mayor and lead prosecutor: Don't mess with the lawbreakers, let them have their "space" for destruction. Works for me.

Yep. If the widely-held ghetto perception of police is that they are part of the problem, it makes good sense to give the residents a glimpse of what their humble home will be like completely without the Thin Blue Line. Let the emmer effer burn, and see what Sharpton makes of THAT.

It might be funny if the Police, Fire and Sheriff Departments should all at the same time be suspended for say 3 to 5 days ... and of course their unions making sure it is with FULL PAY ... for their "poor performance" lately. That short time would sure give those complaining about their military vehicles and riot gear a taste of what it would be like if they keep on neutering the departments.

And where did you find this statement?

Apparently I inferred it from what has previously happened. Seeing a clear text statement is like wanting to see a clear text statement from Hillary Clinton "I changed or influenced State Dept policy after donors contributed to the Clinton Foundation" -- no actual text but inferred by such as this:

Rawlings-Blake (Baltimore mayor) used the phrase in a press conference last weekend while describing the balance between policing and giving peaceful protesters the space to share their message. "It’s a very delicate balancing act," she said. "Because while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well."

And it's clear from reporting that during the riots, Baltimore police were told to essentially stand down and let the "protestors" have their avenue.

So the Baltimore cops are essentially taking the hint and not responding to street problems that they once were pro-active about.

Maybe you've not read the press reports or stories otherwise on the rioting and the response by Baltimore leaders.

Riot gear and quasi-military vehicles notwithstanding, many west Baltimore residents are learning what the absence of police is like. Chaos. Let 'em stew is my opinion.

That was said at the beginning of the protests April 25. That has nothing to do with now, if the cops are not doing their job fire them. The cops don't want to go into the trouble areas but I bet the damn well still want their pay check.

A quote from the Wall Street Journal:

Gun violence is up more than 60% compared with this time last year, according to Baltimore police, with 32 shootings over Memorial Day weekend. May has been the most violent month the city has seen in 15 years.

In Milwaukee, homicides were up 180% … Through April, shootings in St. Louis were up 39%, robberies 43%, and homicides 25%. “Crime is the worst I’ve ever seen it,” said St. Louis Alderman Joe Vacarro at a May 7 City Hall hearing.

Murders in Atlanta were up 32%… Shootings in Chicago had increased 24% and homicides 17%. Shootings and other violent felonies in Los Angeles had spiked by 25%; in New York, murder was up nearly 13%, and gun violence 7%. …

Shooting incidents are up 500% in an East Harlem precinct compared with last year; in a South Central Los Angeles police division, shooting victims are up 100%.
