School bus shooting nearby

This is a really bad "development" about 9 miles away, the regional police even have a substation along with a security force. Lots of gang activity. Granted, it was pellet rifles, but some of them rifles are pretty potent, and maybe something larger next time...
We are in a different district, but both our kids take the bus. Aside from homeschooling or dropping off and picking up (neither are options), how would you prepare for this/protect your kid(s)?
Granted, in the morning and the afternoon, one of us are at the bus stop (our driveway), but they are on the bus for an hour each way (2 seperate busses).
Sit by the aisle and have your backpack handy...that's all I got right now.

What life experience could motivate a sicko to shoot at a SCHOOL BUS!!!
Edited: Never mind, since when does this idiocy need to be logical?

Like the South park school bus driver... Crabtree...
If your screen name is your location, I can just imagine. My sister taught in that district, but has since gotten out.
