Don't know if we've done this: favorite barbecue chain?

breamfisherbreamfisher Posts: 14,060 Senior Member
There's a few 'cue joints I like to go to, but I can't really think of a chain I like. I'll eat at Sonny's, but honestly I'd rather just use my own sauce. And cook it myself. It's tolerable, but not a place I desire to go to....

Anyone got a chain they love to frequent for barbecue?

Famous Daves is about the only chain near here...can't complain about the quality of the food, nor the quantity...only the price....

As far as chains go, Famous Dave's is the one I'd choose. For the most part, the really good places aren't chains, and the chains aren't the really good places...doesn't matter if we're talking about 'cue, fish, or Italian food. I left out Burgers on purpose. IME, some of those chains are pretty good.

    Rudy's
Famous Daves. All I've ever had there is burgers and BBQ nachos. I like their Devil's Spit BBQ sauce. I've started buying it at Walmart to use at home.

The only "chain" BBQ place I've ever eaten at was Sonny's and that was just because it was accross the parking lot from the Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum in Ocala. It was tolerable.

    :that:

The only Rudy's in Colorado is in Colorado Springs, which is about 35 miles from my house. We try to eat there when we make a trip to the Springs. It's good grub.

Had a Corky's here but it folded. Only thing we have now is Bad Bob's. Good BBQ but the founder is a real rectum neck.

Oakwood in Eustis is pretty good. Wife and I go there about once a month. There is more than one location, but not sure if it's actually a chain.

In this part of the country no chain even gets on the boat. But then again not many chains because it would almost be impossible to compete with the locally owned places. There's a place here in Port Lavaca, been here for 60+ years, Whites, has good barbecue. East of here in Bay City, there's Hinzes, and also there's a Hinzes out of Wharton to the north. They aren't the same people. just cousins but their BBQ is very similar and very very good. In Victoria there's a family owned place called Mumfords that kicks ass. You go to Halletsville and there's Novasads, it's fantastic. Up at Luling on the way to Austin they have the City Market, best ribs on the planet. On the way to Goliad, it's McMillans. Any direction you go from here I can put you on quality BBQ but none of it is a chain.:

Forgot to add, up in Lockhart, next town toward Austin from Luling is Black's BBQ. A little expensive but probably some of the best BBQ in this state. And their Pecan Cobbler is fantastic.

I agree about the local joints being better. I've eaten at Oakwood, and agree with Make My Day that it's pretty good. Better than any chain I've been to, and even if hit has 2 sites it's not a chain to me. I prefer the Dam Smoker or King's if I'm in Eustis, but Oakwood's not bad at all. We have a couple of local joints I prefer to Sonny's, and the only thing that place has for me is convenient, tolerable barbecue.

Problem for me with most places is that they use a tomato-based sauce. I was raised on a cider vinegar/yellow mustard sauce. I prefer that type over all other barbecue sauces. Northeastern North Carolina vinegar and pepper sauce is good, too.

We have a Rudy's that I've never tried and a local chain called Bodacious, that isn't bad for a chopped beef sandwich.

The real test of a BBQ restaurant is sliced brisket - if it's tough, I won't go back, or if I do, it will just be for a chopped beef sandwich. Most places can do pork ribs OK, because they are very simple, once you get it right once, but they want premium prices for it. Baby back ribs are a good buy at Sam's Club, when you consider what they want for a brisket, so we just do them at home.

Yep, ribs and chicken and an occasional Fajita have pretty well replaced Brisket at my house. I saw a raw brisket at HEB yesterday that weighed about 18 pounds going for a little over $80. I don't know what was so special about it to cost that because once I saw the price I broke and ran.

I don't know if Dinosaur BBQ counts since there are only 4 or so locations in the northeast, but for being NY based it is actually decent BBQ... And that is a Texas BBQ nut saying that. It is probably slightly down from Rudy's on my list, but for being started in Syracuse- that is pretty high praise!

How do you barbeque a chain
    never go to them

Lockhart?, we ate at the Kreuz Market. Pretty darn good. Sonny's has good pulled pork sandwiches here.

Some of the best I ever had is not from a chain, but a side of the road stand or guy with a pit/smoker pulled by his pickup truck. Never know though until you try one, it could be good or not very good.

Bis, do yourself a favor and try Rudy's, If it's anything like the one here, you'll be glad you did. Be sure to try the sausage links, too.

There are several bbq places around here but none are chains. The ones I have tried didn't impress. I think it would be hard to have the effort needed for good bbq replicated in multiple places.

There's also Price's. Not bad either. But if you ever go to Blacks, it's on the north east corner of the square I think. It's three days older 'n dirt. But they have some humongous beef ribs. You won't eat two of em. One will fill up anybody. And they're tender and good.

As for trailer BBQ if you've ever gone up Hiway 59 from Houston to Texarkana you have seen a lot, and they sell more than BBQ. You can buy Mayhaw Jelly by the gallon. That"s right through the heart of the East Texas Piney Woods. This is Soul Bro-Red Neck Alley.

You'll see a pipe line going back there that says Daylight on it. :rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

    Chain? Rudy's.

The best BBQ, bar none, however, is Cooper's in Llano TX.

One of my riding clubs goes to Dam Smoker occasionally, but I have not been there yet...have to try it sometime.

Cooper's is good, no doubt about it. It's certainly among the best I've tried.
