Listening to an interview with the young man who was hauled off to the police station about the "bomb" he said he asked to call his parents and have them there after he got to the police station, and that there were about 5 police officers present. This is after he was arrested.

I'm not a lawyer, but I believe that after the arrest if a minor wants his parents present, the police have to halt questioning and wait until the kids parents show up.

I'm sorry, BUT Muslims have bought this kind of attention upon themselves no matter how innocent this young man is. Who are 99% of Terrorist in the world?

I think they would have (or should have) done the same and got the device checked out for any kid with any name. "Regular" kids are treated this way all the time and expelled/arrested for fingernail clippers, aspirin, saying Bang Bang pointing their fingers and all kinds of innocuous items they bring bring to school. Plenty are handcuffed too.

The way things are in the world and especially in school environments here they were correct to be concerned, but just screwed up the way the handled it.

Now they have a poster child to put on parade saying we all are overreacting. Same people say "See something, say something". Better to be safe than sorry is the usual comment from authorities after they blow up a left behind lunch box.

I don't see all the fuss here.

What I have seen since my wife has been on the school board, is that when the people that complain are told to step up and get their superintendent certification or run for a school board seat, the conversation is usually over. It takes AT LEAST a year as a school board member just to understand the financing processes of a school district, much less contract law, title 9, school lunch/breakfast programs, etc. A superintendent has to be knowledgeable in a lot of areas and be able to deal with any and all problems in these areas at the same time, throw in some teachers or parents with an agenda, and you are have a lovely day in which to earn your pay. Superintendents and school board members are not lifetime positions, all can be replaced without too much effort, just step up to the plate.

    Have you seen the clock?

Seriously. The large red LED numbers... Aluminum briefcase. .. This could have been a prop on a Lethal Weapon movie. That kid KNEW what he was building, and was doing it for shock factor.

Yep and a 9 Volt batter clip.................of course it needs power, but even being somewhat familiar with circuits/cards/electronic components it is hard to tell just from a causal look it is harmless. Sometime everyday items are used to set off bombs. Hell they can hide plastique explosives inside laptop/boom boxes/brief/camera cases and just about anything else................. even mold it in whee it wouldn't be noticeable.

First rule for dealing with a suspected bomb is "Don't Touch/Move it".....If the school was actually concerned that this was a bomb.....they should have evacuated the school and called the bomb squad to deal with it. If the faculty didn't know this...then the police department certainly should have....If this is an example of how this particular school deals with emergencies in this day and age, I would suggest that every parent in the district remove their kids fromthe place and start home schooling....

Bullsi, where did you find a pic of the clock?
I'm not saying that isn't a legit picture, it's just not what I expected to see after reading this in the original story (down the page a bit) in the link in the op That's a mighty big "pencil case"

That pic is from the Irving PD.

Paul, that isn't a briefcase. Use the power plug at top right for scale. That case would easily fit in a backpack. The case is approximately 6"x4"x1". I had my drafting tools in HS in a similar case. Without the power plug to give scale, it would look like a briefcase, but it's just a small case.

A muslim kid brings something to school that looks like a bomb near the anniversary of 9/11 and people are surprised by the reaction, kid is not smart and neither are his parents, they should have been aware the reaction may have tended towards the extreme, I think they were aware the reaction would be this.

Looks like Mohammed did not "build" a clock. He tore the guts out of a Radio Shack clock and put it in the pencil case:
