First Deer!
Son #2 got drawn for a youth only hunt in a local state park, shotgun/muzzleloader/bow/or legal handgun. Scouted some spots a few weeks ago, my office managers inlaws have property abutting the park so we had a guide in her husband to suggest some spots. There were 10 kids with mentors hunting 900 acres, fortunately/unfortunately, there were 4 other mentors with the same idea as me. When the sun came up there was a ladder stand behind me to my right about 75 yds back and I could see some orange tape on trees down to my left with the lake in front of us so there was someone to my right. Wind was coming off the lake in our faces and a bit to our left. We sat tight for about an hour and a half and decide to try and get away from the crowd and circle the lake to our left which abutted a large field to our left. We walked past a couple kids and their dad that were sitting about 75 yds to our initial left and we were just about to the corner of the lake being slow and stealthy in the hardwoods and this buck come from our right at about 50 yds and my son picks him up about a moment before I do. He pulls up off hand and pulls the trigger with the safety on. He pops off the safety and has a nice broadside shot as the deer approaches a clump of trees and the deer "humps down" at the shot. The deer circles towards us and stops at about 20 yds facing us as he notices us and my son hits him again. He spins off and runs straight away from son and he touches off another and the deer piles up at about 30-40 yds. My son turns to me, elated, and I correct him to stay on the deer since I can still see his head moving, my son had a tree blocking his view. He shoots at the downed deer and misses. I told him to hold off as the deer could not get up and I stepped in with a knife and slit his neck, I hate putting myself next to a downed deer like that, but it needed to be done, besides, the other dad and his 2 kids were watching, I normally have a .22 for such things but they are not allowed in this situation. HARD LONG drag with the Otter Sled, 1 hour of dragging, we both took naps, can't remember the last time I took a nap. Borrowed 870 with a Bushnell Trophy dot scope with Hornady custom Lite 2 3/4# 300 gr FTX sabot. First shot was a high lung pass through and the second shot can be seen at the front of the left shoulder and broke it and unzipped about 4" of the abdomen, I am not sure if the other shots were hits, sorry no autopsy photos. All of my sons shots were off hand standing on his feet.

Thanks!
Gotta say though, I can't remember the last time I didn't take a nap.
Yes, the off hand shooting made me quite proud.
Thank you!

Thanks, will do!
Yep, we are going to have venison fondue opening weekend, a first at our camp.
I would expect it for the Queen
Cooking meat in boiling oil is not manly? We do drink beer while we do it old listen to country music from the 50's and 60's.
Ha! I wish I could shoot off hand like that.
Will do!
Tell your son, "Congrats and job well done!" for me please.

I am happy for you both.
Nice looking buck as well
Thank you!
Beer was mandatory after that drag, my sons get pretty excited about deer season, lots of grandpa, uncles and cousins that help with the educating:applause:
I hear you, I love to see peoples hunting pictures, my son has seen these posts and is VERY happy with all of the acknowledgement.
Thanks guys, I had the best seat in the house to watch the whole thing.
Thanks! I dropped the deer off at a butcher because of the warm temps, we get to decide on the finished products on Monday after they get done with the trimming, trying someone new this year.
