Smoked A Good One

twatwa Posts: 2,245 Senior Member
I smoked this bad boy about 7:45 this A.M. Set up a new stand yesterday afternoon that looked promising and it paid off in a huge dividend. This deer was walking down the trail toward my stand this a.m. and I though for sure I was going to get a 25 yard broad side shot. He got to an intersecting trail and ambled off away from my stand, when he was about 60 yards out and heading away I knew it was now or never, so I gave him two loud grunts. He stopped in his tracks immediately and did a 180. He was looking for a fight, that grunt really pissed him off, as soon as he turned he proceeded to tear of a tree with his antlers, after about 30 seconds of this he made a bline directly to me. When he got within 24 yards and behind some brush I pulled back. He walked almost directly under my stand, (as you can tell by the entrance wound) it was maybe a 5 yard shot.....my best deer with a bow to date. Hell of a morning that I will never forget****

So you got 3 deer already and it isn't even gun season yet? You suck! That is a really nice buck.

No it's a deer I promise....just kidding of course. Yeah he has some great character with those even Muley splits and all the junk at his bases. His only downfall is the busted off brow.

    Edited...actually I shouldn't call them Muley splits...more like kickers

Way to go! I haven't even started yet, taking all next week off for some bow hunting. That's a great Kansas deer, thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for the kind words.....
It is amazing to me how hard this deer was hit and how far he still traveled. After making the shot, I could only see about 2" of arrow sticking out the top of his back - although there was a GREAT blood trail, he still made it about 150 yards. He was dead but still running, I guess that's why they call it a "dead run"...crazy.

I love reading your posts. Great score and great pics.
Your season seems to go from strength to strength the further it progresses.

Quick question, how does your success this year relate to other previous years? I know that its not about the score but all about being out there doing it.......but I am just curious.
Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

Thanks buddy.....this is my largest deer to date with bow so in that regards it is much better than previous years. Numbers wise, I usually end of with 3 or so with my bow and a couple with rifle. It is off to a stellar start for me no doubt...

Thank you from everyone for all the kind words, it is much appreciated!
