Again with mixing outcome and opportunity. Yes I believe the children of crack heads should have most of the same opportunity to succeed in this country as your kids do as long as they work just as hard. I know it will never be 100%, but if we could get it to say at least 50% that would be nice. Sucess in this country is supposed to be driven by who is most talented, but to far too large a degree it is still determined by who your parents are.

That article that you linked refers to how much one's parents make impacting how much they'll make, not who they are. Did you ever consider that the parents with a more comfortable income are setting a different example than the parents with a lesser income? I've never been on a job interview where they asked me how much my parents make.

Alpha, I think it is you who are confusing the two. I also agree with the data presented in the article. However, your conclusions, and those of the writer are incorrect as to causation. The fact that the parents are poor means nothing. I will submit, because I lived it and have seen it going into all classes of peoples homes and businesses for 28 years, that poor kids whos parents practice a work ethic will have a better chance of success, the same opportunity, but they will be the ones crawling into their boots at 5A for the first of 3 jobs that day at 17 or 18.
My folks BECAME successful in my lifetime. Not by working for someone else 40 hours a week, or by waiting for the exact set of circumstances to be laid in their laps. They figured out that they wouldnt get anywhere like that. My father quit his job and went on his own and put 100 hours in a week or more for as long as he ran the business. He had a HS education and graduated 18th in his class of 18. My mother, who sold her cow at 18 to go to nursing school, got her masters while raising 2 kids and working a full time job. I can guarantee you that we were as poor as anyone who is on welfare, my parents just had more pride. I know what govt peanut butter tastes like and I know the size of boxes that govt cheese comes in and that is as far as a handout got.
When I left it was with a one year old watch "So you can get to work on time." Not a trust fund. I did get a lifetime total of 800.00 from them (that was marked down in a book) when things went totally sideways. Once because the ins co I had my car through canceled my insurance because I changed addresses to many times in the service (they really were not on my side), and once for 1/2 a RT plane ticket home.
Now, not being mean, but I dont think you can put yourself in others shoes. You feel you can, but you cant conceptualize not needing a outside force to get ahead. Your whole ethos is geared to getting something from someone and you are trying to present that as the only way to a group in which many have done it differently. You are feeling. With only a basis in one path without accepting that there is another, different, yet still very valid way, without some more exposure to those people, and acceptance that they actually did what they said they did, you will never be able to. You blow off our lives and accomplishments as "an arrogant conservative I might assume that my success was 100% because of my own awesomeness" and quite frankly, that does little to advance your argument.
On the other hand I cannot put myself in your shoes and I freely admit it. EG, what you have done when you got laid off would be a complete anathema to me. Seriously, doing something like that would cause me physical anguish, not kidding. I could not go on vacation when I became unemployed and I cannot understand the thought process that goes into it. There is no part of my brain that can conceptualize burning a severance and unemployment with out a plan in the prime earning years. As another example I cannot grasp many of the things my inlaws do either because I have worked way to hard for what I have.
Is what you are doing kinda cool? Yep. I couldnt do it. I have had hard time taking a full weeks vacation for years without finding something to work on, though I am getting better at it. I really hope, that it works out for you. I dont see how that goes on the "good idea" list, but I dont have to live with it.
