SBR Paperwork and fees?

Can someone tell me what steps I need to take to be all legal with an SBR? I'm planning a build and want to be sure I stay out of trouble. I know I have to do some paperwork and pay a fee ($200?) but I don't know what the paperwork is or where to get it. While I'm at it, I could also use info on suppressor paperwork. I plan on using one with the SBR but it won't be for a while due to cost. Thanks

I went with a trust for my NFA stuff. There is some new things the BATF is trying to push through to make trust more difficult but that is your best bet right now. My suggestion is to get your NFA trust as soon as possible with bank account and tax ID then you are locked in pretty good if whatever happens. Next buy your lower, send in for your form 1 and wait for the ok. The rest is easy and you can end up with something like this!

A trust? Sorry but you lost me there. What is that, why would I need it?

you can go to the BATFE website and download it or do an online submission.

You will need some photographs of you like you would on a passport. You will also need to be fingerprinted.

Note you will also need to have your local sheriff sign off.

However, if you incorporate or create a trust you can bypass your local sheriff.

    good luck

also, just an fyi, iirc, its about a 3+ month wait.

with regards to the can, find a local vendor and they will help you do the paperwork. You will have to "buy" the can before the paperwork can be done. just an FYI, the can can be used on ANY firearm - with the same caliber of course.

So, I googled NFA Trust and understand what it is now. I also got several sites for setting up a trust. Are there any particular ones that anyone can recommend? I see sites advertising trusts for $79 - $149. Im sure a lawyer would cost a lot more so Im hoping one of the trust sites would be a safe option.

After you send in your paperwork and before it is returned by BATFE, get the receiver laser etched or engraved with your info, identical to what you indicated on the paperwork. Once the SBR is OK'd, you can't let the receiver out of your possession and you would have to get the work is done in front of you. A nice common place to put info is in front of mag well. Very neat.

Wizard, what info would need to go on the receiver? And is that really necessary or an added precaution?

you may want to sit down with a trust lawyer knowledgeable in NFA. before you do sit down and do some thinking about:

    1. Who do you want this toy to go to if/when you die.
    2. What paperwork is needed to make this happen when you are gone.
    3. check if someone else can use the toy with your permission. Do they need to be on the trust or ?

it will cost you some $$ up front, but its better to do it now then to figure out when its too late.

On the regular paperwork, (don't know about trust) the BATFE, as I was led to believe by my class 3 dealer , wants the name and city, state of the person who converted the rifle/pistol to an SBR. In my case it was my name and my city and state. Basically, I was the "manufacturer".

Here is a better discussion on the matter. (hope this isn't a violation of policy)
