Got my book Friday, pdf has been on the webpage since Wed. Looks like the season dates are all a week later then usual. Now I just have to wait for the tax returns to lend the state about a grand in fee's, most that I'll get back.

What are you guys looking at doing this year?

And yes CPJ, we know you think its stupid and can't figure out how we deal with it.

Elk and deer this year, muzzle loader. Not going to bother with a bear tag this year.
My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

I got my copy a few days ago, and considered posting something about it. But, I figured you would if I didn't. :cool2:

I'm putting in for buck and bull muzzleloader, with a doe as a backup 2nd choice up near Ft Collins....cause why not? I think I am going to put in for the new antelope unit (48), then its points for mountain goat, bighorn and moose (OUCH that is gonna be expensive). Might put in for a bear point, I can still try to get an OTC for muzzle loader. I know there are bears somewhere around there, down lower then I hunt, but I've never seen any. I'm probably going to buy raffle tickets for a few hunts (and guns) through the Bighorn Society as well. It is a LONG shot, but so is trying to actually draw a sheep tag, for 25$ may as well.

You got room for 2 maybe 3 flatlanders?

I have a more dependable vehicle now and want to come up your way. But I don't see it happening this year. I may be opening the business I've dreamed and talked about for several years on here now. Or I may be working temporarily for a friend who's starting a new business. So I will most likely put it off one more year. But that's one thing I want to do for sure before assuming room temperature. I .want to shoot an Elk, preferably a Bull, but I'll take a cow.

However, if I hunt here it will most likely be the Same ol' Same ol'. Deer and hogs, which ain't half bad.

And if its Same Ol' then it's that same boring ol' aresenal, .270 Win., .30-06, .257 Imp. or 8mm Mauser, and on occasion I have been known to drag out my .250 Savage or my .30-30. No telling what you'll find me hunting with or also my grandson. This past season he shot a nice spike whitetail with my .300 WBY, just because he wanted to.
    Daddy, what's an enabler?

The only time I've ever ran across bears is when I've been hunting something else. I once had a sow and two cubs walk up on me. When I realized what they were, I called out to them and they vacated the premises. They couldn't have been more that 20-30 yards away at the time. Did I mention I had a round chambered in my rifle and the safety off when I did this?

I'll probably just put in for preference points, as I don't have any at this time for anything, so my chances of drawing a tag are pretty slim. I'd like to get a good buck deer, or a cow elk, but I don't see it happening this year.

My book came in the mail today, as I discovered during my lunch break. I will probably go for points all around in CO this year unless you boys tell me to pull the trigger for an antelope. Otherwise, I will probably stash one more year worth of elk points and perhaps try for a muzzleloader bull next year. I will also put in for another deer point.

Luis, where I live, we had the wettest year in recent memory. I'm not sure about the area we hunt, or if the local herds have recovered. I'll try to remember to check before the deadline and let you know.

    Jerry -

That would be awesome. I don't have the book handy and will check the season dates, but I would love to see how we're looking on that. If the herds in CO look good where we'd be hunting, I may opt to stash my cow elk points in Nevada for one more year and finally do goats with you guys this season instead.

Luis, season dates are Aug 15 - Sept 20 for archery, September 21-29 for muzzleloader and Oct 1-7 for rifle. I just got off the phone with a DOW wildlife biologist who works that area. He told me that populations have rebounded some, but not like they were several years ago. But, still better than last year.

BTW, the area is GMU 121 and managed out of the Lamar district office if you want to call and talk to someone. Phone number is 719-336-6600.

Maybe. We won't be hunting out of the cabin this coming year, it'll be camp based. Valley isn't real huge, if we go to the high country unit. I don't know if it could honestly support more then 2-3 hunters, it just isn't game rich, but it is isolated and has zero pressure. If we decide to do the unit to the south (about 300 yards east of where you and I hunted) and you guys could tow a pop up or something heck yea we got room! I have to talk to my hunting partner and see see what is going on. He has points built up for deer and elk, he can easily draw 551 or 561, I couldn't draw deer 551 yet and I'd have to get a cow tag for 551. 561 I can draw both, 56 I can draw both. 56 is a HELL of a hunt, not for the meek just driving up, plus the terrain after can be brutal. Camp is at 11,8 hunting would be up to 13k.

I can also check on maybe working on hunting muzzle and 2nd rifle. I will check with Jeremy about the cabin status for 2nd, not sure if anyone hunts it, don't think they do. That is a possibility if you wanted to come out with the boys. BUT, that is an OTC season, there will be orange everywhere. Remember that first day when we stumbled on the archery guys going up the hill? And then saw the group down below on ATV's...it'll be like that everywhere. Still a chance though.

If nothing at all, start building points up on the boys. It is a bit easier price wise on the youth's and you get back the majority of the fee in June. But starting their points up now will REALLY help in the next couple of years. You are building up points now for yourself, right?

    Jerry,

If we decide to go with 561 (elk) and 48 for deer (48/481/56/561) you could likely draw either bull or cow 0 points and MAYBE doe 0 points...maybe. It'll be during archery/muzzleloader

Watching the point creep for the units we have talked about for mule deer early rifle....you might be better off hunting archery or muzzle sooner then later. They are reducing tags all over the state. My early rifle that took 4 (but I used 6) is now up to 5 min for residents, the 2-3 non-res were at 6+. But muzzle/arch is way easier draw. Although I'm thinking about doing a different unit early rifle next year which you'd absolutely draw, its a low point unit (0-1 res 2-3 non). But it will be brutal, and I'm not even being any way either over/under selling it. It is one of the MOST difficult units terrain wise, but there are huge bulls and the chance at quality to big bucks. And massive bears. Start building bear points!

But the payoff is huge for virtually everything out West. Even a "small" mulie is right up there with a good sized whitetail. We won't even go into how cool it is to hunt speedgoats or elk.

So that said, cpj, are you putting in a for an A, B, or C license? :jester:

Let me know, Muzzle loading season would work better, but 2nd rifle is doable, we have a point built up. I need to get in shape for high altitude.

Fourth rifle antlered mule deer, I need to decide on a unit, and probably a private land doe tag.

Archery is usually the lat weekend in August to the last weekend in September. Muzzy happens during the same same time but towards the end and is 9 days vs 30. This year its Sept 10-18

I think I only understood what cpj posted..............the rest is in a foreign language.

Its so much simpler over here......................Get gun licence, apply for a free ( Yep, that's right, its free) permit to hunt on Doc land, ( or go hunting on public/private land where no permit is required) go shoot whatever game is present, process and eat it.

    ...............24/7/365

The only points you have to worry about are................1. How many on its head?..............and 2. Do you have enough brownie points with the KOTCB.............unless you are single like me then you can forget no 2.

For 4 legged critturs.............did I mention there is no limit..............:tooth:

I let my Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation membership laps with no intention of renewal. They sent me a copy of the March/April Bugle magazine to coax me back. The question asked in the Q&A column is for help understanding the regs from a new Colorado resident.

I'm not a biologist or an administrator so in all honesty I don't know what to think about it. Elk are a valuable public resource. I can olnly hope they're being managed responsably.
My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

I just got a copy of Bugle as well, not sure why, I have never been a member of RMEF. Been meaning to look into joining though, and the Colorado Mule Deer Foundation. I'll have to take a look at that Q&A.

I think CPW is doing a pretty good job on the elk, even if that means reduced tags in my area (herd objectives have been met).

I was a member of RMEF for a couple of years. I dropped my membership because a lot of the members were not as much pro-hunting as they were restoring ALL wildlife populations back to the way the were before the country was settled by white men. Some even advocated bringing wolves and grizzlies back into the state.

We can discuss these issues in a separate thread if anyone's interested, but I decided I wasn't interested in promoting some of the causes such as these.

Had the sit-down last night with my hunting partner and his brother who is going to join us this year (unless his normal hunting partner draws his goat or moose tag). We are still up in the air (pardon the pun, both units are over 11k ft above sea level) between 56 and 561. Both are some very gnarly terrains. One would have easier access to pull a camper up to and be able to get to town/showers/laundry easier. The other...has basically no people once the weekend is gone. Even during the weekend it is usually only 2-3 camps and they are either city folk just camping for a night or people fishing. No hunters. However the areas are not super game rich or large. There are a few drainage areas I have yet to see with my own eyes that look REALLY promising by pics/google earth.

I feel a little bad for my main hunting partner because he has several points built up and for archery, neither of these units really require them, it'll guarantee a tag but I wince a bit when I think about giving up 4 points for something 30% draw with 0 points. At the same time, he doesn't care and just wants to HUNT.

I hate AND love this time of year. So many hard choices to make long before any scouting could be done.
