Daughter update

tubabucknuttubabucknut Posts: 3,520 Senior Member
Just got back from Duke Eye Care Center. My daughter's eye sockets are growing well, and we will be having a test done on her optical nerves in the near future. We are still hoping for sight down the road. They are no longer using anesthesia for her exams. Definite bonus, as any time you go under is risky.

We enter the decanulation(trach removal) window starting in May. If her lungs are strong enough they will remove the trach, and we can finally be done with the nurses. I know we have some nurses on the board, and they are great, but having nurses in your home almost everyday for the last two years SUCKS, no matter how good they are. So please pray for her lungs if you are of the mind to do so.

Still all good news for now. Thanks to you all for the kind thoughts and prayers you have sent out already.

Still Praying:angel2:, check into the Lions to see if they can help, they have an eyesight committee, one of my clubs members just got to meet a guy that had his sight restored with a "bionic eye", his sight is transmitted from a camera on his glasses to the sight part of the brain, I believe, I have not had time to get up to speed on what the guy had done, less than 100 folks have had the procedure done so far.

Thanks Chiro. One of my best friends is a Lion. He has already offered their support. We will take it if needed, but for now we want those funds going to the less fortunate. The eye procedure you mentioned is the primary one we are working towards. A receiver is placed on the optic nerve, and the camera is located in a pair of glasses. At one point last year only 17 of those procedures had been performed in the US. It is either Michigan State, or University of Michigan leading the way with this procedure. It has been done elsewhere as well. We are fortunate to be where we are right now. Duke has one of the best eye care centers in the country, and Lauren's opthamologist is one of the best in the country. People come from all over just to see here.
