OK People, think about this. That ship has air defenses. Any plane that comes within a defense perimeter should be shot down way before it got that close. By that time it was too late.

Have you ever seen a CIWS in action? They were fine.

Well you'll get no argument out of me for that! And also he said it after the fact when words are cheap. But even at that it did surprise me he'd say it. But he probably still has more balls than Obummer.
Well, he does have a bigger mouth when it's wide open.

About Russian trawlers in the Med back in the '70s. If it had a trawler hull, flew a Russian satellite countries flag, looked like an antenna farm, and could keep up with the carrier group, then you can be it WASN'T a trawler. Hell, the carrier could run in reverse and still outrun a real trawler; trawlers are built for slow speed and lots of power; they ain't go-fast boats. Those antenna farm trawlers were FAST!

I wonder how close the Russians are flying to the Turkish border these days? They smoked a Russkie fighter that strayed out of Syria and suddenly the big bad Russians backed off. When the Turks have more balls than America, it's a sad commentary on the respect we have on the world stage!

Somehow I can't visualize Curious George standing on the deck of a Navy ship and yelling
    "PULL!" at the Russians!

Yes, I was on my son's ship, U.S.S. Independence when they were certifying every part of the ship. I've never seen anything like the CIWS. Well, yeah, I've seen video of Puff, and some of its offspring being used in Iraq. Sounds like a chainsaw in granny gear powered by a full house small block Chevy turned up tight!!! But from what I saw on the video, the Ruskie's were already well within its range.

I Don't know why but this photo wreaks of having been photochopped. I can't visualize Bat Ears holding anything more intimidating than a 5 iron.

    Read the article I posted...

And as far as closeness goes, U.S. subs supposedly got hull shots of Soviet submarines. They did this by getting close enough to take a photo with the periscope. That's pretty close to do it underwater.

I'd think that doing the hull shot is difficult due to limited visibility.

But yeah... both are pretty gutsy.

It got a lot gutsier than just taking hull shots...some of those boats came back to port for a little (or a lot, two were eventually scrapped) body and fender work! :yikes:

Supposedly it cost the Soviets a boat or two.

well anyway, back to the original question.

I would ban all lobbyist. There, I just balanced the budget.

And I would also outlaw executive orders.

Would you accomplish this with an executive order?

No, I would simply request Congress to draft legislation, outlawing executive orders, get it to me and I would sign it. They would absolutely trip over themselves passing it. It just might be the first 8 hr bill ever introduced and passed, and signed.
They hate it as much as Bush, etc loves it.

I agree about outlawing or at least controlling or limiting Exec Orders, but when you banned all lobbyists do you realize you just banned the NRA? GOA and every other Second Amendment Organization? That's what they are are lobbyists.

Bump. Blast from the past. How is everyone feeling about executive orders and getting buzzed by Russians now?

Though armed, the Russians wisely and obviously kept their fire control radar OFF. If they'd painted the ship with their radar, things would have escalated quickly, as in the CIWS would have been powered up and the surface to air missiles and radar on the ship would have been powered up.

Too bad we went to the high tech fire control radar we use now. The old fire control radar using the very high powered Klystron tube emitter could have given those aircraft and crew some serious microwave burns at 300 feet, and burned the paint off the aircraft. One of these instances when 'new and improved' isn't all that and a bag of chips.

Edit to add: About those executive orders. Trump is using them to do away with a lot of that Obamanation stuff that Obama wrote into 'law' using executive orders. Did you like the executive orders Obama signed that are being rescinded by Trump via executive order? :tooth:

I see a necessity to executive orders and don't really see how a president would be able to do their job effectively without them.

Are they a substitute for legislation like the current and previous administrations seem to believe? No.

-Cancel the F-35. Really bad idea for a plane that no one wanted. Expensive and the idea that that will try and provide CAS in place of the A-10 is LAUGHABLE. F is for fighter, A is for attack. They want to build something, come up with a updated attack plane that CAN do the job of the A-10, which the Army had to threaten the USAF to fly in the first place.

-The healthcare for all members of BOTH houses will be cancelled in 6 months unless they sit the heck down and come up with something that works for the American people, forcing them to be on the same corrupt crappy system they give to the rest of us.

-Term Limits. 3 terms in Congress, 3 as a Senator, and off the dole. You get a stipend not a golden parachute.

-1% of the total military budget will be given to NASA in perpetuity. Time to start funding the egg-heads that gave us hundreds of products that influence our daily lives. Solar panels, water filters, personal computers, polarized sunglasses, lasik, photoshop.........the list is LOONNNGGG.

I guess, first, I'd ask " are our ships doing in the Baltic Sea?"

Then I'd throw out 90% of federal regulation, disband and de-fund the EPA, IRS, TSA, and BATFE.

    THEN I'd go on vacation...
