Satellite Phone Rental

tealmantealman Posts: 10 New Member
Will be Caribou hunting next month in August and have been advised to rent a satellite phone for emergencies. Anyone have any suggestions (I've googled and looked at the standard ads on it)? Searching the local yellow pages by internet are no help. Thanks

I wish I could help you here. I have considered renting one myself to have absolute communication assurance. That said, I have no clue of who to use for the rental.

Look at the SPOT Personal GPS Locator at www.findmespot.com might be just the ticket....

That's the more likely option I will go with long term. If I get a command job, there's no such thing as "I was out of cell phone coverage when one of my troops got a DUI." You have to be reachable, and a short term text subscription is a very cost effective option.

You gotta love south east Montana! No cell service. Love it every time I'm there.
Aim higher, or get a bigger gun.

Yup! I remember sitting there with no cell service, looking at the OnX phone map (no service needed) and having to tell my guys, we have to stop walking soon...we're about to go into Wyoming. :tooth:

99 out of 100 people would laugh at you when you tell them that country is ROUGH country. The one that says hell yes it is has either hunted it or lived there.

I have one of these. I got the tracker free due to a special offer, although I had to jump through hoops and wait for several months to get my rebate. I also had to buy a $200/year subscription service. The SPOT tracker allows you to record 3 messages that you can send to predetermined phone numbers and email address, as well as an emergency message you can send in case of a real emergency. It will provided the GPS coordinates for every message you send, but it does not allow you to change the messages once you are unable to log in to your SPOT account. It's mostly for letting loved ones know that all is well, or whatever else you think they need to know.

I've only used mine once, but it seems to work well. It's not as nice as a satellite phone, but a cheaper option.

Good luck. I'm looking forward to pictures and a story.

Look at the Delrome inreach explorer I know too many people that have had trouble with the spot.

Now that I look at it, THAT is the one I was talking about. The two-way text message capability to any cell phone and very reasonable 1-month plans really are a strong selling point.

I have had very good service from DeLorme GPS products. I'm still using my PN-40 that has been outdated for years, and I have used their GIS mapping software professionally. Their products are priced fairly and they work much better than I ever expected, after using the really expensive mapping products, for years.
