Knowing which Caribou to shoot

tealmantealman Posts: 10 New Member
Does any know of "guide"/photo internet location to get an idea of what antler set/size to look for on a decent caribou? Of course everyone wants a "trophy" but there may not be any around and a nice one will do just fine. I'll be going to Alaska next month for a hunt.

Third from the left, always. It is a position of honor and respect in the caribou herd where the biggest bull is. Always.

Barring that, I would shoot the one the guide says to shoot.

First of all, congrats on that hunt! It should be an amazing time. I do the same kind of study you're talking about when hunting a new or unfamiliar species or local "sub"-species for a given area. I wish I could help you, but know of no such site.

I would think that your guide will point you in the right direction...I've always heard that "double shovels" are desirable...

Y'all got this all wrong. It's so easy, why you shoot the one whose number you draw. Last time I went I drew number 45. Of course I'm dyslexic and I shot number 54. Pissed em big time because Number 54 was the head guide's number and the Biggest Caribou. So I guess I won't be going next year....

My old hunting buddy who was an Alaskan guide told me try to get a "double shovel " and find one with a high forward curl at least as high as his body, Up in N.B. I think there all woodland caribou , never hunted them so I don't know if there's any real difference in the two.

Shoot the one with the nametag on it that says Rudolph. If you cant read his name tag, look for the one with the red nose.

That way Santa will get lost..............and thus saving gun funds all over the world.

Never hunted 'boos! They have some impressive head gear! Whatever you take, I'm sure it will be a trophy no matter how big the rack is!!

One tip I'll say is gut them quickly and carefully.
The moss/lichen they eat makes them bloat almost instantaneously.

You actually revived a question running through my head for years: does Rudolph's nose operate at 60Hz?
