Scope for Kimber 84M Hunter 6.5 Creedmoor

WORLD TWORLD T Posts: 262 Member
I just picked up a Kimber 84m Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. I am trying to decide what scope would fit/work on this light weight rifle. I want to be able to shoot coyote size critters at 400 yards. I own 5 Nikon scopes on my other guns. Not necessarily a Leupold fan. Any suggestions??

Heck yes..... well I guess not, you're not a Leupold fan.

If you do not like Leupold, I guess that leaves you Nikon or Vortex, unless you have a high end budget.

Awesome score, Truitt! I hate to say it, but a Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x40mm with a Boone & Crockett reticle is about perfect for what you want to do. Fast firing solution out to 500+ yards and a reticle fine enough to actually do it without being hard to see. You can go to the Zeiss Conquest HD with a Rapid-z reticle, but the reticle is not as fine as the Leupold and the scopes are significantly more expensive. Great glass though.

Personally, I am not a big fan of Nikon's BDC bubble system. They are nowhere near as precise as the other options I mentioned.

Nice rifle, great caliber I'm jealous! You didn't mention a budget. I've been a Leupold hater for years for years. I recently changed my mind on them and have a VX6 1X6 on my custom .243 win. love the scope.

Depending on budget if not a Leupold fan, Vortex would be the way I'd go. Outstanding products as well as scope series for all budgets!

    Again, outstanding rifle/caliber..Congrats!

You're on a roll, why stop at 5? Nikon makes great scopes. Get another one and make it 6. I own 4 Nikons and might make it five with my next one. Monarch's are beautiful scopes.

However, one other scope has attracted my curiousity lately, the Zeiss Conquest. Something like a 4.5-14 would be nice, if they make one in that power range.

I have more Burris scopes than any other, and never had any problems with them or any other brand I own. I would advise you not to buy a Simmons, as a dealer/gunsmith I stopped selling them because of lousy C.S.

You should also know that I have not bought a new scope since I retired in 01, so I'm not up to date on the newer scopes.

I am going to say budget is no more than $600.

I was looking at the Nikon Monarch 5 2-10x.

You seem to be like me staying with a lower power scope. Give the Vortex 2.5-10x44 Viper HS 30mm scope a look around $425.00. Vortex builds great scopes with great glass and outstanding customer service. You can go with a 4X15 Viper HS for around $500.00.

Best of luck on your choice!

I wasn't the biggest Leupold fan myself, but based on weight alone I went with the 3-9x40 VX-2 on my Colt Light Rifle, at 11oz is about the lightest scope you can find in that power range for just about any price. Scopes are made too dang heavy these days, anything from Vortex is going to be over a pound, I have not looked at the specs on a Nikon in a while. The Zeiss Terra and Conquest aren't too bad on weight IIRC, and really are good scopes.

I hate the Nikon bdc reticle. Too fat.

If you want a Nikon get a Nikoplex reticle. I have a couple BDCs a Mildot and a NikoPlex. I prefer a NikoPlex

I think I am going with a Swarovski Z3 3-9x36 on this gun. I put an older Zeiss scope on it to see how accurate this gun is before I spent the $$$ on a Swarovski scope. It does shoot sub moa if I do my part with Hornady ammo.

...a Leupold VX3i is going to be lighter than just about anything comparable across the board, & a very good scope, better than most, especially in the same price range...

The Swarovski z3 are in the same price range as a descent leupold or Nikon. If you step up too the z5-z6-z8 there is a considerable price increase. Optics are one of the things I believe you get what you pay for. That should be a good set up. Post pics when you get it set up

U have enough Nikons to try in the rifle to see if any of them would be satisfactory. I've been a believer in Nikons ever since I bought my first Buckmaster many moons ago.
A $600 budget - assuming bases & rings are a separate budget item - gives you many options and it will be personal preference in the end.
I was most impressed with the Leopold VX3i that SS3 used on our recent Antelope hunt. You may want to reconsider your opinion of the brand, I know I have.

Not to derail the thread, but you guys ever post a hunt report on that antelope hunt? I don't recall seeing how it went.

That VX-3i is probably going to be my next scope for my new AR upper (if it ever shows up - standard gunsmith rolling slip timeline applies on this one).

I bought a Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x50, 30mm for my BLR 7mm-08. This scope makes me rethink the Leupold idea now.

SS3 should be posting an after action report w/ pictures in the near future.

I have several guns with the VX-3 in 4.5-14mm mounted on them and can't imagine that you will be unhappy with the newer iteration.

Jay, I am surprised at that statement, I have five Simmons scopes and I have not had a moments problem with any of them. I have made shots from 250 to 400 yards with them, in all kinds of weather and temperature extremes. Some of us cannot afford to spend as much or more for a scope as we did for a rifle..........robin
