Earlier this year I looked at my weight, my family's health history, and decided I needed to make a change. But, I didn't want to use supplements, shakes, or anything I had to buy at a specialty store.
I cut carbs (sugar especially), went higher on the protein and vegetables, used full-fat foods in moderation to increase my satiation levels, and dropped 25+ lbs. Started at 211, this morning I was 186.2, with my weight generally hovering between 183 and 186. Breakfast is eggs, bacon, and coffee. I do use Splenda in my coffee, no sugar. Lunch is a salad, meat, and maybe a vegetable. Snack's an apple, dinner's protein heavy with maybe some whole wheat pasta. But that's only once a week. I drink coffee or water.
Hardly ever get hungry, sometimes I'll even work through lunch before I realize I missed my lunch. Life's good.
I've been doing the Medi-Weightloss program which is ultra-low calorie medically supervised diet. I lost 20lbs in 2 months and have now started gaining it back because I can't keep starving myself. So I was planning on doing the Atkins Diet and increasing my exercise back to 5 days a week. Just didn't have the energy to exercise on 900calories/day.

My father is diabetic so I googled Dreamfield's to see if I could find it locally. I found the link I posted above. Basically it is no different than regular pasta. They were sued and they settled for $8M.
Diver, I'm sorry. I wasn't setting out to prove you wrong. I sure was hoping it was legit. My dad has problems controlling his blood sugar.
Yea we saw the settlement also. Our doc recommended it and it did help our sugar levels when it was part of dinner. Not sure what to believe anymore, just know it helped us.

Don't starve yourself!! Not good and you will NOT lose weight. If you feel hungry, eat something that's high protein!! Beef jerky is great, low fat and high in protein. Eat a high protein breakfast within 45 minute of waking. Eat lunch, like a turkey sandwich on P28 bread, mid afternoon a protein shake, dinner, three hours after dinner a protein snack, protein shake at bedtime. You will find your energy increase and you will sleep better, too! Before I did the high protein thing, I could only swim for about 30 minutes and I'd be so tired I could barely get out of the pool. Now I swim at least an hour or more every day. The only reason I get out is so I can pee!!
I use Pure Protein shake mix with almond milk, and their protein bars. All the mixes pretty much taste the same. Read the labels on protein bars, some of them are just candy bars in disguise!! Atkins and Gatoraid are the worst, only 7 grams of protein. Look for at least 20 grams.
Pop or any sugared or sweetened beverage is poison. Wanna loose weight? It's either water....or water; hand-squeezed lemonade or orange juice works, but not as a constant liquid source.
I enjoy a regular Coke every once in a while, but we grew up considering pop as a rather luxury treat, only to have maybe a couple of small glasses at the grandparent's Sunday dinner (In the '70s biggest bottle you can get was the 25 oz. one and it wasn't as cheap as today), so such beverages are quite unusual at our home; in fact the girls are 2 years old and have yet to taste any soda.

Good job!
Rimfire-- From my experience, low carb does work. There really isn't any magic to it. 2 things are happening-- One is that the higher protein and fattier foods are harder to digest and take longer to digest so they keep you feelling full longer. Secondly, by eliminating a huge portion of your carbohydrates, you are also eliminating a huge amount of calories that you would be consuming otherwise.

I put on some weight with my back and hip troubles, and the resulting reduced mobility. Now that I'm getting back into the swing of things, I'm trying a low-glycemic diet. Kind of like low carb but with whole grains and some fruits that Atkins won't allow. It's slower but a lot more tolerable.
And there's apps to show the glycemic index for different foods.
ETA: My doctor told me just this week that he likes this approach, and to stop worrying about how fast the weight drops. More important that I'm eating better and being more aware of the foods I eat. He says to think in months and years, not days or weeks.

You are totally on the right track and your doctor is a smart one. You didn't gain the weight overnight, and you aren't going to lose it overnight either. Being conservative, slow and steady is going to keep it off in the long run.
I thought about the low glycemic. It would be good to keep my sugar in check, but I don't have to think too much if I am only trying to eliminate carbohydrates. When I have to think less, I am more likely to stick to it.

In my opinion, moderation is good.
buying off the shelf ( processed food) is part of the problems and how our food is grown (or enhanced).
Look at what you buy and try to go as natural as possible. processed food have so much stuff in it.
I've posted this before but i will try to make it short.
I been traveling around the world now instead of buying more toys...mostly Europe. But what i noticed is that when i see people in Europe, most of them are what most would say "average" weight if at all maybe slightly on the overweight side. It would depend on what book you subscribe too and what doc you ask. But when i was in Paris i notice that there weren't alot if any overweight people. standing in lines and just people watch you can usually spot the Americans since they were the ones oversight along with their kids. When they opened their mouth, it was verified. There were other people from other countries, but i notices more Americans.
Realize that french food is really delicious and they use things like butter and drink wine. things our docs say to avoid. But they do it in moderation or at least i never seen people go overboard with the butter and wine.
i notice many "shop for the day" and when you go into a store they dont have grocery cart(S) full of processed food waiting for the freezer. They buy maybe a whole loaf of bread and such. But they shop for a day or 2 since the stores are usually close by. The bread dont have preservatives in it since the bread i have had will be going stale that day.
in any case, look at what you buy and how much processed it goes though.
So an update: Friday and the month before that, I was bouncing between 336 and 330 (depending if I peed, pooped or whatnot) and couldn't seem to shake it. Part of the problem was that I was pushing my limits to see what I could and couldn't get away with and maintain a good blood sugar (180 or less 2 hours after a meal). Over the weekend I started getting stricter about my carbohydrate intake. We went to my camp up nort where there is the most awesome jerky place ever just up the road. Between that, the summer sausage they also sell, cheese, sardines, low carb tortillas, and ham (washed down with white wine and brandy) and only snacking when I got hungry, the highest my sugar got was 125 and that was after I forgot to take my "sugar pill" that day. Fasting blood sugar was right at 80. Dinner Sunday night was 2 cans of tuna with mayo, dill relish, and onions and cheese on low carb tortillas.
Yesterday I was gluttonous and had an entire can of Spam, 3 slices of cheese and 2 low carb tortillas for lunch with mustard. Midday snack was straight up celery. Dinner was a chicken fajita with packed with chicken, onions, peppers, cheese, salsa, avocado, and lettuce. Then I had some cheese and summer sausage as a late night snack.
Since Sunday, I have been floating between 327 and 332 which is a new low for me. I have not been hungry at all.

Thanks! 327 is about what I weighed 4 years ago. I was 315 6 years ago. I was 286 14 years ago. I think I will be able to see my wiener again somewhere around 275. It is going to be a long road but I am slowly making progress and haven't really gone in reverse yet. (I went from 350 to 354 at the SE Shoot but lost it plus two more pounds a couple days later.)
Diabetes was the kick in the ass I desperately needed to make a change.

Right on for you setting a goal and having the desire to see I through. You already know it won't be easy, but you can do it. Also, calorie trackers like myfitnesspal work great to keep you honest, even when doing low carb.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.
Today, my stepdaughter was over the house. Her (overweight) doctor put her on some crazy 850 calorie a day diet. For obvious reasons, that didn't work out very well. She started seeing a nutritionist last week that was pissed about the doc's diet and put her on a much more sane and realistic 1500 calorie a day diet and limiting her to 50 carbs a day. She was here doing the math today and realized that she already hit 104 carbs and that was only after lunch!!!
We did the math on my gluttonous eating yesterday. One can of Spam is 6 servings at 1080 calories, 6 grams of carbs total. Adding up the rest of the stuff, I was at about 1900 calories for the whole day and well under 50 carbs. If I had cut my Spam serving down to half a can, it would have put me at 1400 calories for the day without even trying.
Her biggest concern was "gaining water" due to all the salt, so she has been avoiding all the stuff like hot sauce, mustard, pickles, and deli meats-- all the stuff that is helping me stay on a diet. No bacon or jerky? What the hell!!!
I had to dispel the "salt myth" to her (like I did 100 times with Sam). Unless you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, kidney problems, congestive heart failure (like Sam did) or hormone issues that would indicate otherwise, your body will regulate sodium and water levels just fine without worrying about your intake. Other than being overweight, she is a perfectly healthy 27 year old. Unless she has serious health issues, her salt intake doesn't mean crap. And if eating pickles, bacon, and hot sauce helps her lose fat while gaining a limited amount of water-- so be it!
Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.
One thing that you also need to do on a high protein diet is to drink lots of water. The basic formula is to take your body weight, divide by 2, and that is the minimum amount (in ounces) of water you need to drink in a day.
This will help you lose weight, make you feel full, and most importantly, will prevent you from getting gout and 'keep the mail moving'. Gout is really frigging painful, and you don't want to get it- and high protein diets can cause it.
I'm on the way back down again. Protein shake for breakfast, protein shake and 2 cups of veggies for lunch, 8 ounces of lean protein and 2 cups of veggies for dinner. Last time I was on full bore, I lost 75 lbs in 6 months. I need to take 25 of those back off again. I'm on the way

In the 2.5 years I've been type 2 diabetic I have learned a few tricks. Jerm, you know some of them. The shiritaki is only good to me in a Ramen substitute.
Zoodles (zucchini noodles) are your friend. I make a spaghetti sauce and then either VERY quickly blanch for two minutes in hot water or microwave before adding the sauce.
Flat Out makes some AWESOME pizza flats. Tortilla like but even with the stuff on top, usually they come in at 24-26grams a piece. One word of advice. Two minutes on BOTH SIDES before topping, or they are too soggy. They make wraps as well.
I make low carb peanut butter cookies that come out around 5 grams of carbs a piece. The secret is almond flour. Not cheap, but it works. Yes it says vegan, but I swapped out the shortening for butter and added an egg. These are good. I also make some biscuits that are reminiscent of the Red Lobster cheddar bay ones, but they HAVE to be refrigerated or they will become a science project in 2 days, but only 2grams per biscuit.
Also a great trick is to use combinations as has been suggested. I always try to combine a protein with a carb for a snack. Apples and cheese. Nuts and fruit...etc
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. Winston Churchill
This morning I weighed 326 even without taking my morning CPJ, fasting blood sugar was 75 even after skipping my dose of metformin last night. I am going to skip it today too because, science and stuff. Back in March, my fasting sugar was 158!
Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.
Thanks! I had a 4 egg, ham/cheese/mushroom omelet for brunch today. 800 calories and 10 carbs. My 1 hour and 2 hour blood sugars were 92 and 95-- No meds. I am liking this trend. I may have kicked diabetes ****!! (time will tell)
Now I got to lose 86 more pounds...

Good job on getting on a plan and losing some weight.
While I'm still fairly lucky that my metabolism keeps up with my eating habits pretty well, as I get older I can tell it's getting easier to put on weight. I can still drop weight pretty easily without much of a change to my diet. Just more exercise. But I have had a cholesterol problem in the past, so I do keep an eye on how much cholesterol I eat. Apparently, eating cheeseburgers, pizza and buffalo wings on a regular basis doesn't do well for my cholesterol.... I'm a fast food junkie, though. Pretty much all I have to do is cut out fast food and exercise more and I can drop weight and get in better shape pretty quick. Which is exactly what I need to do. I have no idea what I weigh right now. My guess is probably close to 190 or so. I've been as high as 210. Within 6 or 7 months I was down to 165. Usually like to stay around 175.
321 this morning. I haven't taken my metformin (it is supposed to help sensitize cells to insulin, letting the sugar in, therefore reducing blood sugar) since Tuesday morning. Blood sugars have been fantastic!
Diver-- I was 350 at last year's SE Shoot. 300 pounds would be a reasonable, healthy and conservative goal for me to achieve before next year's Shoot.
