Opening day

Warm and humid, cloudy, no wind...

Hope I don't regret letting the spike I say at first light walk away

    Good luck!

You always let the first spike walk away! The second one....not so much.

It finally cooled off, a little, here. I am glad our season doesn't start for another two weeks.

I hope your season gets better bullsi.

It was 72 degrees today in Minnesota. We went out this morning and didn't see any deer, decided to go fishing instead

I did not see anything worth shooting. My brother got a big bodied 5 point cull buck, and my buddy got a big sow pig.

    Going out again now.

Heh - It took me a second to realize what I was seeing there. Good on you to let a few walk. Your season is just getting going, so you'll have time.

This is the first year I haven't been concentrating on opening day. The weather is horrible for hunting, but I have other factors that are impacting my opening day, even more. There has been pipeline construction going on since mid-summer, right through the middle of our 200 acre lease. It was supposed to be over, two weeks ago, but as I sat in my blind Saturday morning, I had pickups, bulldozers, and dump trucks driving by me, 50 yards away. Also, the timber company that manages the land chose two weeks before the season to burn off the underbrush on the west 1/2 of the property.

I was aware of the likelihood of the burning, before I signed the lease, but no mention was made of the pipeline construction. It would not have mattered, due to the low price I paid, and the fact that the season lasts till January. Also, once the work is done, we will have a 100 feet strip of winter grass going right through the middle of the property, which should draw the deer back in. This has been a good lease in the past, and will be again, hopefully in time to salvage some of this season, but most certainly for next year. I don't regret leasing this land, because it will be almost perfect for our family 'needs,' once all of the work is finished, which I expect to be by the middle of next week.

I never let a deer walk, on the first day, that I would take on the last day.......robin

I like the way you think Robin.

Being primarily a meat hunter, I tend to follow the above for the most part.

Edited to add: With no seasons over here, when I go hunting its either recreation and/or freezer filling.

Created this in the blind and sent it out to my hunting party:

Yeah, I let a couple deer walk. I have venison in the freezer, so I was being selective in what I would shoot. But it was a couple of great days hunting. Got to be in the woods with kith and kin, enjoyed some schizophrenic Texas weather, watched some wildlife, and my brother and buddy harvested a couple fine animals.

Going back next weekend. I bet it will be a great hunt then as well
