Now it's real! I got my first moose today

This morning opened up pretty cold for the time of the year. It was a crispy 10 degrees F when we started our hunting day. It was our first drive and it had lasted for about 30 minutes when I saw a dark shadow passing light between the trees a few hundreds yards away from me. It didn't take long to see that a moose cow with calf were coming towards me. My father was a couple hundred yards from me and I whispered to my hunting radio that a couple of moose is coming right where he is. Soon I heard dad's Tikka's bark and focused to see if the cow comes to shooting distance. (we have a rule that you are supposed to shoot calf first and wait for it to fall until you are allowed to shoot the cow...)
Dad radioed that calf was shot and after about 30 seconds I saw the cow about 120 yards away from me. I took the shot aiming for the lung shot. It was a tight spot between the trees and I didn't see any marks of the bullet landing so I reloaded my rifle and pulled the trigger. I saw it hit the moose and a couple seconds later cow started to stumble. Later when I rushed to shoot the headshot I noticed that first would have been enough alone.
So, I got a big cow and my father got a calf. It was a nice hunting day for both of us. This was my first moose ever and I felt privileged to get an opportunity to hunt and shoot it.

Great to see that you have your first. Love the look of the terrain and scenery.

The cow was on top of the steep hill. Perhaps 50 feet high. All the treese had been cut down a few years ago so there were a lot of stumps that made it difficult to move. We could get a car to about 100 yards away from the moose. Gravity took mostly care of the hill as we use plastic "slead" where we put moose. Rest of the way there were a six men packed with some elbow grease and we pulled the rest of the way. Calf had to be pulled for about 300 yards from the place where it fell.

That is awesomely beautiful country! Any forester who sees these timber stands will immediately want to get in them to marvel at Nature's beauty up close!!

In all my years of hunting, I've seen exactly 2 moose. They were a cow and a calf, and the cow looked huge.

Gun control laws make about as much sense as taking ex-lax to cure a cough.
I think I would rather hunt in that cold than the 81 degrees and humid I had this weekend

Thanks to you and every one else for the congrats...
Yes, you are right about my success! During the end of the summer I never even imagined that I would be this lucky. I was prepared to stalk one deer as it was first agreed with the hunting club. I would have been very happy with even that. Now I have got a roe deer, couple of deers and now a big moose cow. And the season is still in halfway towards the end. Anything can still happen. Moose season continues to the end of the December and our "entourage" still have licenses for a total of eight moose. One bull, two cows and five calves. Deer season continues 'til the end of the January. And we still have licenses for at least one for me if I have a chance to shoot it.
I've been so lucky with my new coming to hunting.
