About 25 years ago, my best friend and I decided we had to have .44 Magnums in our meager arsenals. He got a Super Blackhawk, I got a 7" Redhawk.
Took them to the local range, bought some 240gr full-house loads, and readied. I was still getting set up when he fired his first shot.
BOOM! [F_bomb!]
I peeked around the corner of the lane to find him staring at his new revolver with a look on his face that said, "My God, what have I done..."
My Redhawk was much tamer, just for the record, although I did sell it to another friend a few years later. But another took its place a few years ago, so all is well...
“A gun is a tool, no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.”
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. Winston Churchill
I didn't think the 300 RUM was all that bad either. Yes, you need to respect her, and she lets you know she is there, but not all that bad. I can see where bad technique could be painful.
Reason obeys itself; and ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it.
H&R Handi in 500 S&W firing I THINK 385gr. 5 shots, I was GOOD AND DONE! Nuff of that for me. That dang handi rifle weighs LESS then the X-Frame pistols do!
That's the next one on my list. It's my plan to have one before the next SE shoot.
Rich, if you're going to be there, I'm going to give it hell to make it. I want to meet you face to face. The one thing that may stop me is work. If I take an overseas job that would stop me but that's all.

12 ga. slug guns from the bench make me put on my "Past" recoil shield and it still beats me up pretty good. The load that I worked up for a Canada bear hunt in my Marlin 45-70 with 400 gr. Speer Jkt. bullets was close to the same discomfort level. But the absolute meanest kicker in my vault is a Ruger No. 3 carbine in 45-70. With top loads from the Speer manual and their 400 gr. JFP's, this thing kicks viciously! The slim factory carbine stock with curved plastic butt plate didn't help a bit. I replaced the stock with one of fancy walnut and it has a recoil pad; what a relief.
With Reloader-7, I'm getting about 2100 fps with the Speer 400 gr. bullet.
There's no such thing as having too much ammo, unless you're on fire or trying to swim!
Boils down to two. First is a 475 A&M. Its a one shot bolt action repeater. I say one shot, because the first shot can dislocate your shoulder. No real need for a second or third tug on the bolt. Second is the 35 Newton, when fired out of the original rifle. The butt is a slender, narrow affair, which is murder on the bod. Both are worse than a 460 Weatherby, or most anything else for that matter, except for a 50 cal. with out a compensator and recoil pad.
Not the nastiest, but those 12 gauge bolt action shotguns aka the Marlin goose guns, those were somewhat nasty to shoot.

If you mean handheld, it's this. Almost sprained the web of my hand when I pulled the trigger.
If you mean not handheld
Ha Ha ! Wussssssssssssss......... joke.... :angel2:
I love lil short barreled shotguns no matter how hard they kick.

I shot my ex FIL Marlin Goose Gun with 3.5 inch shells. It did rock and roll, but it had a decent pad on it that took the pain out of the equation. My .270 Model 70 push feed made in 1966 will knock the jawillabies out of you on a bench. It has a pad i added about 25 years ago. Before that it had a hard plastic butt plate. But I think the plastic butt plate felt better than the pad I have on it now. It's so hard I think it's petrafied. After 3-5 rounds, I'm ready to throw the thing in the lake. It just hurts.

After reading all the posts on here, I have come to one conclusion. I'm not near sure what is the worst recoiling monster here, but I know one thing I'll about stake my next retirement check on. A good pad will make a big difference as will good grips on a handgun. A lack of or a hard pad can make some guns that aren't that hard recoiing feel like a battleship main battery. But a good soft pad can take a lot of ouch out of it. I now have three guns that need a better pad and I will get that taken care of. No use having a gun you can't enjoy or realize it's potential because its painfull.

The Freedom Arms 45-70 single action was entirely managable for me.
The nastiest to hear?? A handgun chambered in 30 caliber carbine!!

Heck, Joe's .300 RUM rocked me, but it wasn't abusive. But I did not like that Guide Gun of his....

I'm wondering if some of it is a form thing, different guns, maybe in a hurry, at the shoot.
I don't think my .450 is anywhere near as bad as my RUM.
I thought that the .450 was actually pretty fun.
I agree with monkey boy. Come to think of it, the 3-1/2" 12 gauge I shot at a SE shoot a few years ago may have been slightly worse.
That's the next one on my list. It's my plan to have one before the next SE shoot.
I know that. Watching you rapid-fire that thing at steel was rather entertaining.
Yes, yes it was. He shot that like a machine.
I gotta admit, when those rounds connected and sent the plates spinning round-n-round the axel...........I giggled like a little girl.
If I ever get another Handi, I'm still going to punish myself, probably get a 444 Marlin version!
