Need new carry piece.

RocketmanRocketman Posts: 1,118 Senior Member
I'm tired of the crappy trigger on my Kel Tec and Ruger LCP. Its a mile long and I shake like a dog crapping a razor blade while aiming and pulling the trigger. I do however want a gun with the same lightweight and slim characteristics because I refuse to dress to carry. I like how my crappy trigger carry guns fit in my fifth (watch pocket). I want something with at least 10 rounds. I'd like something in 10mm or 40 if possible. No 1911's as I've yet to hold one that weighs less than a brick. I have $4700 in the gun fund but I'm not going to go for broke. Need suggestions. Always hated the looks and bulkiness of a glock but I know they function great but know squat on their triggers. Need your advice badly before I purchase another paperweight.

Good luck with that idea of a 10 oz pistol in .40 or 10mm :yikes:

Trigger on my LC9s Ruger is decent and it is sub compact. Go hold one and see if you like it. 17.2 oz and you can pick them up fer $300-320

Having brain farts, been sick for about 3 days and I'd rather not embarrass myself with improper terminology, so, I want a carry gun with the hairline trigger that my Vaquero has once the hammer is cocked back, but without a hammer to cock, if that makes sense. Also, I'm a terrible pistol shooter (some which is from Parkinson's), but I get along.

LC9S or Shield are what I've shot. Shield comes in .40. I don't think you are going to get 10 rounds of .40 in a tiny package.

Dream on. You won't get that kind of trigger without an exposed hammer. Period.
The NEW Ruger lc9s has a nice trigger. So nice I didn't believe it was a Ruger.

So what's all the rave about Glocks? They have that long ass trigger too?

You're not going to get 10 rounds of anything in a pocket pistol size.
The small Kimber pistols, micro or Solo should come close to what you want.
Kahr PM series are very good, as well.

So I'm limited to carrying the weight of a brick on me if I want a good trigger?

Granted I have Parkinson's, but how are all these folks (including zee), making all, these videos of perfect shooting? I've never been a pistol shooter but ****...

You can only learn so much by yourself. You'd be surprised how much a little proper coaching could help you.

Actually, my spare mag for my LCP is a 10 rounder. There's a 15 rounder also but it's kinda long.

    Short answer.
Get a good pistol. The ones you have.....are cheap. The triggers are horrible.

Buy a good gun, dress around it, and practice/train. Simple in concept, requires work and sacrifice to execute.

Sig 238 (.380acp) has the size and trigger. Has to be carry cocked and locked though.............. that means a safety.

My wife has this one.................... great trigger.

I'm partial to my Polish P-64 in 9X18 Makarov, almost a clone of a Walther PPK. It can be carried hammer down on a chambered round with a fairly good double action pull for the first shot, and a VERY good single action pull after that. A Wolf mainspring cures the crappy double action pull it's got originally, and it's also C&R eligible for less than $300.00 most places. It's got a 6+1 round capacity.

Or to go light you could find an SMC-918 in 9mm Makarov...

My two cents. Get away from the striker fired pistols. You cannot get away from the long trigger as it's part of the mechanism. The Walther PPK, Makarovs, Radom, etc. are solid choices, except they are 380 or 9x18Mak. The only downside is the first shot double action is pretty heavy, but after that they are a joy to shoot.

My choice would be the CZ 2075 Rami. You can get it as a decocker OR a normal DA/SA which means this is the only 9mm that can be cocked and locked OR double action with the hammer down on a round. I've carried that way cocked and locked for a long time, and it's my preferred method, though having to retrain as I have the M&P now.

Yes the CZ 2075 is 26 ounces, 10+1 of 9mm (or 7+1 of .40) but it's not a half measure. I'd give up the notion of finding a effective pocket pistol and get a decent holster for the CZ. Or resign yourself to making the most of the ones you already own.

Edited to add, the only other pistol that closely fits that criteria to me is the the Sig P938 at 16 ounces but single stack so 6+1.

    :agree:

Also check out the Walther PPS and the XDs series for CC. They don't meet the 10rd criterion but the are friendly to carry and the trigger is as good as you'll get on a striker gun. There is no magic bullet for carry guns or we'd all have the same one, its all recipe of compromises that you're willing to make. Some people won't compromise and so they carry full size which is its own compromise like you already said...Most of us will have multiple carry guns for different times of the year, climate, or dress. Good luck!

I'm not trying to be a D ick here, but Parkinsons + a "hair' trigger sounds like a recipe for disaster....
Those long trigger pulls on SD guns are that way for a reason..
Neither of the pistols you mention are target pistols and they are not intended to be...they are designed, essentially, as a "GET OFF ME" gun...

Your insistence to "not dress around the gun" severely limits your choices of carry guns

I've got a Springfield EMP in 9mm, with a great trigger and is lightweight to boot. I love mine.

Hard to beat the S&W Shield. For self defense, you don't necessarily need an 18 round magazine. The Shield has a pretty good trigger that can be made better, I believe.

Or a Glock 43...trigger isn't so great, but it's predictable and you can get comfortable with it. Not a lot of difference in the two, both are flat and easily concealed.

How about a revolver? They make some pretty light weight ones in .357 and you can do a lot to the triggers.

Lately, I've been carrying a 9mm S&W Shield in my front pocket. It prints, but I don't care. The one caveat is that I spent $140 modifying the trigger so that I could shoot it accurately. The only reason I carry the Shield instead of purchasing a Glock 43 is that there was a trigger kit for the Shield that moved the break-point forward enough to accomodate my XL hand and long fingers. I also carry my XDs .45 often, because it came from the factory with a trigger that worked for me.

The 9mm with 147 grain HPs is pretty potent in a subcompact.

Shoot a titanium frame revolver in .357 and you'll get a wake-up call. Shoot an aluminum frame .357 and it will also hurt, but not as bad.
