Saw two spotted fawns yesterday

I posted earlier that we had just moved back to Texas. Our house is surrounded by pecan orchards, and there are tons of deer living in and around them. We have seen a doe with a new fawn a couple of times since we moved here. Both times they were in the orchard behind our house.

Yesterday, we had to go into town for something. When we pulled into the driveway, I saw two spotted fawns in the vacant lot next door. They weren't quite sure what to make of us, but stood still and watched us as long as we did the same. As soon as I got out of the car, they ran off, but probably just out of sight.

About 2 minutes later, Mom made an appearance, and wasn't near as concerned with us as the kids were.

It's kind of neat to see things like this, even if the deer are a nuisance at times. A few days ago I saw one in a neighbors front yard, and every few years the HOA hires a company to trap and remove about 400 of them. I think the company runs them into nets, and then euthanizes them. The animals are butchered and donated to local food banks.

There you go, part time job for you and as a bonus we get to learn how to net deer:jester:

This afternoon, we saw another set of twins, or perhaps the same ones. They were a couple of miles from where we saw the first pair, so I'm thinking they were a different set.

Then, later, we saw a doe with triplets. I don't think I've ever seen that before.

Pretty cool. I like watching the deer come through my neighborhood. Sometimes see 2 or 3 out front.

So far, we've seen a doe with a new fawn, two with twins, and one with triplets, and have been here less than 2 weeks. I don't think the local population lacks nutrition.

During this past week we have seen a doe with two fawns that are no more than 24" tall the side of my yard, several times. I suspect they are in the woods that runs along my property. We have deer frequently running through my yard as I have woods on both sides or my property. They are fun to watch hopping and jumping.

In the fall when there are crab apples on my trees they come every evening to feed on them. Last Fall we had 11 deer behind my house, along the lake, that passed through. There is a small woods at the side of my property that they often bed down at night, as I see tracks across my driveway passing from the farmers field to my woods.

    Fun to watch.

I saw my first set of whitetail triplets last week. I think all the rain from spring made it a favorable time for deer to pop out lots of fawns. Good news for us hunters!

I saw an antelope doe with triplets just once in over 30 years. Mule deer have whatever the coyotes miss.
