A comedy of errors.

Got to elk camp this year and found out all the bread I bought on sale went moldy. Then due to lack of sleep, erected my tent under a widow maker. When I loaded my piece for opening day, I discovered I was short some spare accoutrements I use to keep my load dry. Opening day nothing seen. Sunday morning well in pursuit, I needed to avail my self of the deep woods facilities. Turning around to fininsh my buisness, I discovered an audience. Mom and her yearling not liking my sudden attention tried a 180 about face but were delayed by copious dead fall. With my trousers bunched about my ankles I shouldered my rifle searching aim, but not before big mom made cover. The yearling delayed a fraction of a second too long. It's an absolute miracle I hit her and I can claim no skill in it at all. By the time I gathered myself up and realoaded and made my way across a maze of dead fall, she was already attracting flys. So I decided to forego the pack frame and tote her pieces back to camp on my shoulder. It was a foolish decision that carried parden the punn extensive consequences. Another elk with the Hawken cap-lock 2017. No pics, believe it or don't.
About the only thing I did right was to be in the woods with a tag and a weapon.

I had to wait a couple days for the prcessor to finish. It was nice. Piece and quiet in the woods with no phone, and no, well almost no traffic.

I actually saw the largest deer of my life, right in the middle of a pee. Rifle was leaning against a tree. I was not as fast as you and he disappeared quicker than he appeared.

Nicely done Early. I have to say though, I always see game when I stop to relive myself, eat or drink something, or put my gun down to adjust my gear, it is like magic:jester:

Dumb question - what is a "widow maker"?

A large branch or tree that can fall on you unexpectedly.

Large dead tree branch, tree or anything that can fall on you that you set your tent under.

You know at moments like this a video would have been worth its weight in gold! I mean pants around your ankles, possible fresh pile beneath your feet, swinging on a fleeing animal and making an incredible shot. You possible could have left out the part where after the shot you went to take a step or two, possibly stepping in your fresh pile or tripping over your pants around your ankles, Your story gives incredible visuals to the imagination but a video...priceless! Congrats on a great shot while in a bind and putting meat in the freezer!:worthy::roll2:

When I put up my wall tent I was looking for dead trees. Not seeing any I thought I was good. What I didn't notice was one aspen had a spilt trunk at the base. Half the split had already fallen exposing only a small portion of trunk base to support the tree left standing. This showed itself at an off angle I didn't see until after carcass recovery. By then I just chanced it due to physical exhaustion. I was indeed very lucky this year.

Jeff, God save me from video. Much of my life is similar to what you've imagined. :tooth:

Good shooting. However, I would recommend NOT practicing that technique at a public range....

My dad shot a deer in a similar fashion..

In the back of my mind I knew this could happen one day. Of course public facilities are more preferable if available.

which is why a 'cross chest' tactical sling makes such good sense for hunting. You can... keep your rifle handy while you have your gun out, if you get my drift.

Who knew that those animals were related to catfish? Is using stinkbait as an attractant legal where you hunt?

On a similar note, it seems the best way to attract an antelope is to kill one and start field dressing it where it dropped. It's not unusual for another one to come take a look to see what happened. Linefinder even killed on while I was dressing one I just killed.

Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do to fill the tag. You got meat for the freezer, and had a successful hunt. And a funny story to go with it! :roll2: What's not to like?

I dropped two does one morning within about 5 minutes of each other, (3 doe a day limit in most of Tennessee) and while I was field dressing the second one I looked up to find two more watching me from about 50 yards away. My brother tried to get one of them, but the sun was rising right behind them and he couldn't find them in his scope. When he tried to move to a better angle and take a shot, they bolted.
