The last time I ran that route was in 1980, escaping from Commiefornia after spending several years in a nasty custody fight- - - -which we won! Merced to Bakersfield to Mojave and points east, all the way to Nashville. I was driving a 1970 Cadillac Fleetwood and towing an 18 foot 3 axle backhoe trailer, and Mary was following in a 59 Chevy Suburban and towing a Datsun 510 station wagon. The Caddy/trailer rig weighed nearly 18,000 pounds! I got 5 MPG for 2500 miles, and Mary's rig got 10! Gas up every 100 miles! It would be difficult to shove us back out there with a D-9 Cat!
Be careful in 'Chocolate City' as a former mayor called it......................

My cousin and I used to fish in that lake back in the mid-1950's. He lived about 8 blocks away from it, just a short walk, or an even shorter bicycle ride!
