"Traditional Westerns?" Not so much. The market for traditional westerns left us in the 1960s, with some hanging on. Lonesome Dove wasn't a traditional western, but an excellent series. The last western I saw was Appaloosa, which was good, but not a good guy/bad guy with a virtuous female to be rescued.
The spaghetti westerns were among the first to drift away from white hat westerns. Lots of action, but the heroes were not models of virtue. If you want that sort of movie, they are available on Netflix.

TCM is playing Warlock tonight. A 1959 Western starring Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda and Anthony Quinn. Not bad at all.

I'd rather have my sister work in a whorehouse than own another Taurus!
“Appaloosa” was good, along with “Open Range”. “Angry Eight” was bizarre. But the worst movie I’ve seen in the last 30 years was “The Quick and the Dead” with everybody from Hackman to DiCrapio!
"The Quick and the Dead" with Sam Elliot and Kate Capshaw is a great Western....give it a watch!

i love westerners too, but the way that Greedywood is, they dont have the gonads to do anything too "risky" and want a 100000% sure bet. Then once that movie makes the $$$ all of the others will pile on making some junk or anything to ride the wave until its over and then you wait again.
I read a western fiction once. IIRC it was writen by Ralph Compton, and called The Dawn of Fury. The hero character hooks up with a dog at the beginning of the story that sides him through the whole epic. At the end, after a huge gun battle that finally claims his life the dog is at his side in the dusty street howling non stop as the sun sets. Make a real corker of a movie.

I'd put "Jonah Hex" in the category of weird westerns. One western I really liked was "The Professionals" with Lee Marvin, Lancaster, Ryan and others. Chato's land was another good one.
I caught a good one from back in the day, one weekend when Wife was at her mother’s. “Last Train from Gun Hill,” with Kirk Douglas as a Marshal trying to bring a wanted man back for trial, with his men trying to stop him.
“A gun is a tool, no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.”
The 1996 movie rendition of Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage, starring Ed Harris and Amy Madigan is an excellent picture that not only stays tight with the content of the book, but is remarkable in its keeping with the feel of the original story.

Not a great picture but GC's hat is really nice. Stetson Plainsman I think. Wide brim, sort of off white color. First class rack all the way.
