To Hades with pepper spray for that purpose. If ya gonna use less than lethal means, then a jumbo can of Raid! Wasp and Hornet spray would be the go-to for that purpose. It sprays further, and has the added advantage of being absorbed through the skin, and has a much longer reach than most pepper spray cannisters. Nothing like a would-be shooter lying on the floor twitching from the neurotoxic effects of the bug spray. And with as long as it takes for the cops to get there, the would-be shooter would hopefully have expired from the effects of the neurotoxic spray before the EMTs would be allowed to touch him, and transport to the hospital. That's a whole bunch of thousands of dollars saved in trial and incarceration right there! And no 15 minutes of fame for the shooter! Win-Win!

(I am NOT being facetious, either. My preferred method for disposing of these shooters would be a quick trip to a very large wood chipper for conversion to mulch. No need for a trial; they did the deed, no question as to guilt.)
