The different numbers are clinical in my lack of real life understanding. In other words the dreaded chain immigration referenced seems to be over my head. I understand that one bill stems the flood while the other opens the gates. What I don't understand is if the referenced flood are or will be legal immigrants, why is this flood a problem? Is it because our economy, infrastructure, and communities can't absorb the population?

The first bill that failed got 193 votes. It was the more conservative of the two, in that it did not offer a pathway to citizenship for anyone entering the country illegally.

The second one was a compromise that did offer a pathway to citizenship for people entering the country illegally. It got about 130 votes.

So, the first bill is the one that leadership should have pushed for, and found the necessary tweaks to make it pass. They ignored that fact, and went for the amnesty bill, thinking that it would appeal to Democrats, I guess - a complete failure of leadership, either due to stupidity or cowardice.

It doesn't really matter, because the Senate wouldn't have passed either.
