Any Nissan Rogue fans out there.

My mom and dad are shopping for a new vehicle. They have drove vans for many years. Looking at a smaller suv now. They liked the Rouge and asked me what I thought about the 4 cylinder. I have never liked a 4 cylinder but don't have much knowledge of the newer ones. Anyone know anything about it??

Wambli's right. 4 cylinders made anytime vaguely recently will put out more power than you'll ever need!

My sister has one. Took a long trip with her whil back in Michigan this year. Nice car. No idea what motor it had.

    That sounds promising so far.

We rented a Rogue last Christmas for a few days. I did not care for the seats or the way it handled.  I like the way my CX5 handles on the highway and the seats much better.

We all like things for different reasons. Take them for a test drive in different ones.

In-laws just bought one....unless you're like 4 foot 3 inches tall your head will rub on the roof if you sit in the back seat...

You need to sit in one and look at the visibility you have for changing lanes. I don't now how old your parents are or how flexible they are for looking over their shoulders, but a lot of mid-sized and compact SUVs suck for rearward visibility. They all seem to have sucky rearward window sizes...

I sent them a picture of the CX5 and told them they should test drive one of them also.

Don't know about the Rogue, but we just bought our second Honda CR-V.  I guess you can say we like them.

Both have 4 cylinder motors, and have good power.  The one we just bought has a turbo, and has more power than the old one.  It also gets better gas mileage, ranging from about 31 to 34, depending on driving conditions.

The old one had a bit over 100k miles on it when we traded it in (it's a 2012 model), and was still in great shape and ran good.

I suspect that the Rogue is comparable, so I think it all boils down to personal preference.

That class of vehicles always makes me think of a swoopy-doopy athletic shoe!

I have a 2003 Murano and it runs good but lots of electrical gremlins, rusting in weird places, not very good mileage with a 3.0 V6, has some bad blind spots, I would buy a Mazda.

Only thing in that class that impressed me was the Ford Edge..............

    Worst was a Sante Fe.

What was wrong with the Santa Fe? One of my dance sisters has one, it seems to be nice enough for a shoe shaped "SUV". I've ridden in it a few times - come to think of it I drove it once, seemed fine. Its not what I would want, but very little is these days.

The Edge is a great SUV, but a much higher class that the CX5 and such.  Daughter has the titanium and just loves the things.

I recommend trying a Dodge Durango; with or without the hemi.

Didn't like the seats, the ride, or the brakes. Stereo sucked too..........

My wife just got a 2018 Flex as her demo.  She's had them before and we really like them.  They have a TON of storage space with the 3rd row down.  I like the ride and how they drive.  Not the best looking though.

Thanks for the feedback.  Rentals don’t usually come with the top of the line interiors or equipment.  I recently got a Mazda 6 from National and the experience was nothing like I’m used to with my car.
And this was.............. 7-8 years ago??

I know it is an apples and oranges comparison, but this is what I am used to as my daily driver:

At 6'4" I barely fit in the Santa Fe and the little, hard seats were nowhere near as comfortable as the leather captains chairs in my Suburban.  Ride quality just can't compare either.  Little SUV's just are not for me, but I rent them on a regular basis when I travel because they are better than the alternative......what passes for a "mid-size" car these days.  My favorite rental when I can get one is a Tahoe.  My next favorite would be Ford Edge, followed by the Dodge Durango.  None of those would be a fair comparison to the Santa Fe.  To tell you the truth, none of the small SUV's impress me much, although I do recall being impressed by the Ford Escape when I rented one in Atlanta a couple of years ago.

You can keep "technology packages" and most definitely leather seats which I detest, but my dance sister's Santa Fe drove nicely and was comfortable enough (despite the leather). I had occasion to rent a Sonata a while back, and it was fine too. Neither would hold back on a hill worth a darn, but that seems to be par for the course these days. Transmission shift lever got a lot of use until I found out the **** would auto-downshift on downhills if you were running cruise control. If you're going to load up a vehicle with computers, they might as well do something like that, because most Americans don't have the brains to do it for themselves and will ride the brakes all the way down the hill!

They are still test driving stuff. If I was a betting man I bet they end up with another mini van. Mom says if she is off somewhere and sees a chair she likes she knows it will fit in the back of a van.😁

Now THAT is the 1st thing in this thread that makes sense. 95% of SUV owners would be far better off with a minivan.

True enough, but they are a FAR better vehicle for most people than most SUVs. Generally speaking, they have much better interior capacity, they're more comfortable, they drive and handle better, they're safer in many regards, and they get better fuel mileage. Now if you wanna tow something, the equation changes - mostly in favor of "real" SUVs like Suburbans, not the pretty shoe shaped ones.

Speaking of towing something. Our 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has the same engine as my parents 2010 van. At least with the Jeep I could re-gear it. Running 513 gear ratio now. Was supposed to give gas mileage back but it didn't.
  • zorbazorba Posts: 25,247 Senior Member
5-anything is wonderful for towing - but I can't see it giving you good mileage. The '63 GMC 1 ton pickup I grew up with had a 5.14 - a real stump puller in combination with the SM420 transmission.

That Jeep is probably running 38”+ tires. A gear set that deep won’t be completely terrible on tires that tall.
