Beautiful day on Lake Michigan... that's South Manitou Island -the southern entrance to the Manitou Passage- about 15 miles off

Point Betsie Lighthouse built in 1858...the color and arrangement of the windows is known as a "Day Mark"...ships carried a book that showed the Day Mark of every light house...at night each light had it's own pattern of blinks...

A closer view of the Pierhead light... it's clad in steel plate so it can take a beating from the waves breaking on it...also arranged to present corners to the prevailing wind...

That first picture looks similar to the chalk cliffs at Dover in he English Channel. Cool lighthouses!

Mariners had a lot of say in the color of lighthouses....quite a few were changed from their original paint after Mariners lodged complaints..." Can't see the damn thing!"

This could be a long post, but I'll keep it simple. I've lived in Michigan, Louisiana, California, North Carolina, Okinawa, and Colorado, and set foot on a lot of other places. For pure beauty and remote places, Michigan pretty much beats all.

    Very nice. Great fun.

If you were sailing, you could have at least had the Swedish Bikini Team manning the ropes wearing their team uniforms.

My brother was given an old 16' sailboat a couple of months ago.  He has it ready for its first test run this Saturday.  I will be going along with my 19' runabout as the safety/towboat.

There's no such thing as a "free" boat...

Sure there is.  I used to get this stuff in my corn flakes when I was a boy...

As a boat owner, I will not disagree with you.  We all know what "BOAT" stands for:
    Break
    Out
    Another
    Thousand

Bought mine about 3 years ago for $1,800.  Between trolling motor, electronics, new Evinrude and rigging, I have put another $15,000 into it.  The 30 year old hull needs paint and doesn't look fancy, but every functional part in and on the boat is brand new at this point, so it is easy to put it in the water and go any time I get a hanker'n to......as long as I have the time.

Aren't those the ones that you put baking soda in and they will dive and resurface?

I own a drift boat...in other words...a row boat...went to buy new oars...guess what...for 10 foot carbon fiber shafts with laminated wood blades...$ 1000.00....so the BOAT thing holds true across the whole spectrum...

    The "Free" sailboat.
Not much wind today so for awhile I was actually running circles around him with my trolling motor.  :D  But.....it didn't capsize or sink and he got out and back under his own power, so we are calling it a win.
