One Less Yote in the World!

Been getting more pics of a few yotes in my game cameras lately.

And they hit the gut pit every time I throw a carcass in there. So, I went out this morning to try and thin them out.

Sat in a deer blind watching several sendero with the hopes of catching a coyote crossing. As it got light, I started seeing deer but no yotes. So, I decided to try calling.

Pulled out my handheld jackrabbit call and blew for about 30 seconds. Picked up the rifle and waited.

Not 2 minutes later, a yote pops out of a sendero about 50 yards away and starts walking towards the stand.

I aim out the window, he stops and stares, I send a 52gr Nosler HPBT through his chest at 37 yards with my Ruger American Ranch Rifle in .223 Rem.

Dead yote.

Unfortunately, I almost immediately see another yote dart across another sender about 200 yards away and disappear. Guess I have more work to do.

Thanks. Actually surprised he showed up. I’ve never called with a handheld before.

They work...and killing them when they come to a call keeps them working....Coyotes are smart and get call shy fast...

I was hunting with my cousin out in Colorado in the Comanche National Grasslands and he was working a howler...I saw a coyote coming in from about 300 yards out...making a bee line...as soon as my cousin switched to a rabbit squeal that coyote immediately locked up, swapped ends and left the area in high gear....the younger female that was coming in at the same time kept right on coming, much to her misfortune...

Pretty colored coat, did you keep it, or too thin to be of use?

And someone has to ask.  Did you eat it?

Good huntin' Dude!  Shoot them scoundrels. There's hundreds of 'em down here that need thinin'. But these egg heads around here would rather be overrun with vermin than let you hunt for free. And I ain't payin' some A hole to fix his problem.

Nah, threw the whole body in the gut pit. I don’t need the pelt and I already have a yote in the freezer to eat.

Just saw one up here the other day. Full winter coat. Only way you can tell them from a gray fox is the size.

I’ve only shot a handful of yotes in my life. But, one thing I’ve noticed is that they have a very sharp, ammonia Ted odor about them. Which I find odd. Being that they are dogs and well......my dogs don’t smell that bad.

Anybody else notice the rather rioe smell smell of a yote?

I tried not to get that close to 'em. The couple of times we shot 'em at least one of my boys was along and he threw it in the pickup and threw it on our gut pile. I had no desire to handle it. South Texas Coyotes are mangy looking and generally smell bad. Not as bad as a Bore Hog but bad enough where I don't want to touch it much less eat it. And they have fleas big as B-17s.

I don’t find the smell of even the biggest feral pig to be anywhere near as strong and foul as a male coyote.
