Dry fire away with it, put a spent .22 round in it and rotate it to try it out. I concur with Mike. I am betting it is a dedicated .22 target rifle. My guess is a custom stock in an upgraded action and barrel. 12 lbs is too heavy for a .22 to lug around.

I don't know, but the way that stock is made you had better round up some ammo and go shooting. It looks serious.
I just hopped on the scale with it Mike and got somewhere between 11-12 pounds . don't think I'll be taking long walks with it.

With a .900 diameter at the muzzle it's a target rifle similar to those made by Mossberg, Remington, Anshultz and others. I've shot a pile of the remingtons and mossbergs when I was a 4H rifle instructor. They are all accurate beyond belief. And knowing Savage, this one is way better n average. Shoot the damn thing.

After some looking around, I came up with this. It bears a strong resemblance to a Savage NRA 1904b.

Seems like they come from the same neck of the woods anyway.

Definitely looks like a legit R&D gun.
Still wondering
What were they thinking.
