Bacon with a .223 Remington!

Took a friend out for his first nighttime pig hunting excursion tonight.

We showed up at the fields and there here was a boar by the machinery. He heard us driving in and was steadily moving across the field. So, we grabbed our gear and tried to make up some ground.

It took us a bit to to catch up to him and only after he stopped creating distance and started feeding again. We flanked him to get the wind right and clear an irrigation pivot. With a clear background, we slowly closed in on him and at 80 yards, my friend set up on the Spec-Rest, as the grass was tall, and when I said “Send it!”..........sent a 64gr Speer Gold Dot on it’s way.

The bullet struck the on side leg just above the brisket, shattered the bone and deflected downwards through the heart and out the off side, behind the leg and just above the brisket.

The boar ran about 50 yards with his on side leg flopping. Making a semi-circle, he plowed into the ground and expired.

A perfect shot.

If I wanted to have a pig head mounted, that thing would be a good specimen. What did that beast weigh?

    195 pounds

He had some good teeth but they weren’t exceptionally big. Would have been really nice in a few years.

Nicely done, looks heavy, and long.

Great transverse shot he made. sounds like a perfect pursuit, too.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

I learned that when most taxidermists do a hog head, they remove the tusks and extend them out as far as they can. They would have that thing looking like a warthog.

he got an exit with a 64 grain .223 on an almost 200 lb boar- I'm impressed, isn't the gold dot designed for anti-personnel instead of big game?

He hit the leg bone on entry, but being in the lower portion of the chest cavity, the bullet didn’t have to deal with the wider portion of the chest and shield.

The Speer Gold Dot/Federal Fusion is a molecularly bonded round that is good for barriers and soft tissue.

I’ve used it quite a bit on pigs. Been happy so far.
