Goddess Mother! How stupid can you get? I guess when 2 liberals get together, the stupidity isn't additive, its multiplicative!

Wow! I was suspicious that it was a spoof of some sort, but that is actually real. Just wow!

My older brother is one of those idiots.  He recently disowned my parents because they voted for Trump.  He disowned my brother and me because we are gun owners, and apparently we desire the death of our niece because we believe in gun rights.  He never once called me and asked for my opinion and reasoning for my belief in gun rights.  He just decided he knew how I felt and did not care for the lives of children.  He has decided all one needs is a revolver and everything else is just evil and sadistic.
Apparently free thought is punished, and conformity is required, while peckerless cowards run the show.

    ECHO...ECHO....echo...

    Ah......One savors the hypocrisy!

I would have linked to that article in the Sentinel, but you have to have a paper subscription to get the online version, and I wasn't sure anyone could get to the article without the online newspaper rights. The comment that got to me was the father saying there had been only 2 home invasions in the neighborhood in the last eleven years. My question is: how many does a neighborhood need, to warrant some home protection? Amy's answer to the dad was even more unbelievable than the dad's.

Wow, reading about it with strangers is bad enough. I can't imagine having family like that.

Just tell the daughter, "Don't play Russia Roulette with your semi-auto at the dinner table" and everything will be fine.

That article reads like a SNL spoof. Where do these people get there ideas about gun owners? Comedy Shows?

I hope she does move out. If she hangs around that girly man any longer, his stupid is gonna start to rub off on her.

I thought the article was fake also but here it is again.

I wonder if she gets her info from the Boston Tribune 😁

And every gun-ignorant reader of that trash will believe every word written. Probably confront their own family members similarly.

I have liberal family members who are well aware of what I am. They have never came at me with ultimatums of any sort regarding guns or politics. I can't imagine pulling this crap on one of my kids unless they were a junkie.

People like that father need help, and not the "help" he's getting from an advice column, but the mental health kind of help

That column was in the Minneapolis Star/Tribune also, wife got all bent that hollowpoints were banned in 11 states, I told here they were not banned anywhere they allowed hunting, they were legal everywhere.

Reminds me of POTUS William Jefferson Clinton stating: "These Talon bullets. They could cause horrible wounds"! Uh. Bill. That is what they are supposed to do.

If we're picking apart the post, would it be wrong to point out that:
    A.  This is evidence, not proof, of a group's beliefs.
    B.  Two individuals (the letter author and the respondent, three if you want to count the editor who ran it) is a very small sample size, and extrapolating the data gathered herein might not be indicative of all liberals and their breadth of knowledge about firearms and ammunition.

I mean if we're trying to get fact straight and all..
    Meh.

    You make a good point.

In a similar vein, would this qualify as evidence or proof that the media is doing more propagandizing than actual journalism?

I think that the public is struggling at the moment with what to do with evidence, when nobody seems to ever follow up with the type of investigation that can assemble enough evidence to establish actual proof.

I really don't know. Part of me says it's also part of an effort just to gain revenue through page hits, and to gain notoriety. Lots of us googled this to see if it was true. I know I did.

On the other hand lots of outlets are known to be antigun. Make My Day referenced the Sentinel. If he means the Orlando Slantinel, it's quite well known to have a bias. I think a lot of people just don't care, honestly.

Or if they do, they won't put up with right wing BS any better than the current flavor. Might stick with the current based on "better the devil you know than the one you don't."

Humans are overall petty, selfish, shortsighted creatures and unless something negatively affects them, they really don't seem to care.
    Meh.

The evidence does seem to support such an assertion. I used to be fascinated and completely disbelieving when I would read about the German people professing ignorance of the Nazi attempts to exterminate the Jews, sterilize the mentally deficient, and all of the other logical absurdities that enabled their "crimes against humanity."

Over the years, though, I have witnessed the stubborn unwillingness of a large segment of the public to see and understand lies and demagoguery, whether by politicians, educators, religious and ideological icons, pseudo-journalists, advertisers, or really anyone whose personal ambitions can benefit from exploiting ignorance. I still cannot decide whether this is a subconscious phenomenon or merely a carefully calculated self-interest strategy. I reckon it must be a combination of both, in concert with an incomplete education.

When I posted this article (Orlando Sentinel), I didn't realize that so many people didn't know about "Ask Amy" ref: Google searches. It is an "Advice" column. It is a nationally syndicated column that is run in thousands of newspapers across the USA. I read it primarily for entertainment and for vicarious interest in other peoples lives and problems. This article was probably the first one by that columnist of it's kind in my recollection and I thought it would be interesting to all of you, because in my opinion, a lot of anti-gun liberals think like the letter writer, and would be typical of that kind of mentality regarding guns and gun owners. If I had thought it to be "fake news," I would not have wasted my time on it, or I would have said it in my post.

I don't think its fake news. Writer gave his real concerns and questions. Lady gave her her real thoughts.

Who knows how truly representative it is?

Had a freind at work before he retired. It was his engrained assumption that all gun owners had them for the purpose of self defense and the projection of power to compensate for fear, and that guns equal violence. He also seemed inclined to believe that police could just shoot combative felons in the leg or arm at will during a crisis.

    Again.
Who know how much his thinking about guns is shared by others?

The idea that anyone could be so simple, irrelevant, naive, ludicrous, senseless, dumb, futile, ill-advised, laughable, foolish, trivial, dull, shortsighted, dummy, thick, rash, loser, unintelligent, brainless, dazed, deficient, dense, dim, dopey, gullible, half-baked, half-witted, idiotic, inane, indiscreet, insensate, meaningless, mindless, moronic, nonsensical, obtuse, pointless, puerile, simpleminded, slow, sluggish, stolid, stupefied, unthinking, witless, doltish, imbecilic, out to lunch, thick-headed about guns just seem fake to me.
I'm guessing others felt the same.
I really do hope that poor girl moves out.

I was trying to keep the list short. Not get carried away and all.
This still seems fake to me. I mean it really did appear in an advise column but I think a fellow staffer wrote it to generate buzz and increase interest in the column.
Kinda like the National Enquirer with all it's, "Bigfoot Stole My Baby!" and "Space Aliens Made My Wife Pregnant!" claims.
The whole article seems fake and with an obvious agenda. They just wanna make it seem real so they can preach to their readers.

You know, I hadn't thought about the writers letter possibly being a spoof, but it's possible, since the stupidity of the writers attitude seems almost surreal. As far as Amy goes, I think she answered honestly with her true opinion, given that to her it probably seemed like a genuine question/opinion.

In a different world Amy would have replied

    'Dear Dumbfounded,
I feel your pain. The trouble with kids in todays society is that they refuse to take advice from either their parents or people with more knowledge.
While a .40 cal semi automatic will be ok for self defence in a home invasion scenario, a .45 cal  semi, preferably in a '1911' platform would be better.
Since it was first introduced back in the beginning of the last century it has stood the test of time, served our country in multiple world wars .was the caliber of choice for many armed forces over the last 100+ years and still is touted in many circles as 'The' caliber for personal defence.
Having said that, the .40 is a vast improvement over other offerings on the market like .38's and 9mm.
You could try taking her to a range and setting up a ballistic gel target so she can see the difference the larger 45 cal makes.
When all is said and done though, the 40 is streets ahead of a sharp stick when it comes to self defence.
My advice is to enroll her in a self defense course to enable her to become familiar with techniques that will assist her in dealing with any possible situation where she needs to resort to using her firearm.
Perhaps for her next birthday you could  give her a gift voucher to attend such a course...........along with a few boxes of Hollow points.

    Amy.

Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....
