6.5 Creedmoor - Doe

A buddy called me yesterday and said the deer were destroying the oat pasture for his horses. Wanted to know if I could come help thin the herd.

Hell, why not?!?

My boy and I showed up with my CVA V2 Scout Pistol in 6.5 Creedmoor using 130gr Hornady ELD-Match bullets and Leupold VX3 3.5-10x scope.
Buddy pointed across the oat pasture to a makeshift blind he’d built for his kids to use. They’d all tagged out and he needed more deer gone. Said they wouldn’t enter the pasture until right at dusk and pointed out where to expect them.
Boy and I walked across the field and got in the blind. Had to adjust some things to get set up with the Spec-Rest for the pistol.

Just before sunset a spike and freaky fork horn showed up and crossed the fence. But, they were further to my right than anticipated and I couldn’t get a shot. Neighbors walking their dogs down the county road spooked the two bucks and they departed the field.
More deer began to show up after sunset. Waiting at the edge of the brush before crossing the property fence and into the oat field.
A young 8 point, a few does, yearlings, the two original young bucks.......
With about 10 minutes of legal light left, a mature doe and yearling crosses into the oats. But again, way to my right.
I started adjusting everything and trying to shift the blind to my left. A heavy pipe fence post next to the blind blocked the doe and I was struggling to get a shot as legal light ticked by.
She finally moved slightly left and I aimed at her heart with the post filling half my scope field of view. Told my boy to keep an eye on her after the shot.

At the shot I lost sight of her. Lifting my head, I saw her running left down the fence. She turned and lept over the fence. Crumpling to the ground just over the fence.  Didn’t go far at all.

The is my first deer with a 6.5 Creedmoor as a cartridge and the 130gr ELD-M for a bullet. But, the best part is always having my boy with me when I hunt.

    CVA V2 Scout Pistol
    6.5 Creedmoor
    130gr Hornady ELD-Match
    Muzzle Velocity: 2,525 fps
    Distance: 88yrds
    Broadside Heart Shot
    Impact Velocity: 2,391 fps (est.)
    Distance Traveled: 17yrds

    Entrance

    Broke 1 Rib on Entrance

    Exit

    Broke 1 Rib on Exit

For a nominal muzzle velocity, it still provided decent terminal performance damage to the chest cavity.
Having seen her go down and the failing light, I didn’t look for a blood trail but went right to her location.

REALLY like the CVA Scout Pistol. For the money, it is an EXCELLENT Specialty Pistol platform. Beats functional Hell out of Thompson Center. Aesthetics/Ergonomics are a little failing in the grip/Forend and trigger guard. But, metal work and performance........no question it’s better.

6.5 Creedmoor?  It’s a 6.5cal and I love that caliber. The cartridge is a lesson in salesmanship. Every reasonable velocity from a rifle and what I’ve experienced in both rifle and pistol has been less than spectacular.  It’s science. Less powder. Less speed.

For the pistol, I’ll accept it for my distances and less recoil. But, I would never excitedly own a so chambered rifle. The .260 Remington smokes it with handloading.
The 6.5 Creed works. No question. It ain’t a favorite.

I’ll be heading back soon. My boy and I have been taking turns taking deer this year. It’s his turn next and I’m gonna let him use one of my .260 Remington rifles.
    A proper 6.5cal rifle. 😎

One small flaw in that logic...
Running the numbers through QL using their defaults, empty case capacity both have 53.5gr h2o capacity and when loaded to 2.8" with a 140 ELD-M the CM actually has 2gr more usable capacity
I seat long with the .260 Remington and can fit more powder in that case before “issues” than I can with the 6.5 Creed.
Piss on books and computers. It’s factual results that count.

Thanks. I really think their finished product of this model is what they should have done with off of their models.
